Unless on private land and able to possess written permission that you are PESTING on the land owners behalf. If not you need a license in possession.

True ! Once cold and wet weather rolls around the GS go dormant.

you can get a 1 day non res for $23 a 2 day for $49 and there are also some deeply discounted licenses for Veterans.

As cold as it's been off and on the past two, three or four weeks up here in Nor Cal, I wouldn't expect to see too many digger squirrels out and about. It's been rainy and then it clears and gets cold, below freezing. It's been doing this for a while. Not trying to be a bummer, just making you aware of what you might encounter when you get here so you're not negatively surprised. If it warms up, you might get lucky!

I was out hunting yesterday in CA and it was cold/damp/overcast. Did not see a single GS all day. A month ago, they were everywhere.

Went out a few weeks back, saw only two GS...packed up and left fort he day...Need warmer weather. But yes, you need a hunting license no matter if on private land with permission.

Pretty ironic since the ground squirrel is a highly destructive pest in California, and they want to revenue (charge) for removal.

No wonder the UHaul rates out of CA are so much higher than IN
