HPA Fittings Warning

HPA fittings warning if you have a pcp you need to read this!

This is a HPA fittings warning for anyone who either has – or is thinking of getting – a PCP airgun. It’s been a voyage of discovery for me…

The important points are these:

1. Contrary to what “everyone” says, there is no standard for these quick disconnect fittings.

2. You need to inspect your fittings TODAY as they can become damaged with use. I found one and it’s frightened me!

So..... what brand would be considered as a standard for our HP rigs? Links? I dunno about you, but I have a big bag of "so called" Foster fittings. Some fit together, others not, some brass, some steel, metric, standard, British pipe, on and on, into the darkness. "IF" there were a standard that the majority uses, I'd convert all my stuff over, and throw this bag of head ache away!

I, much like you, had a plethora of fittings but got rid of most of the brass China made stuff years back as they did not play well with the rest of my fittings. That is not to say that some of my fosters are not Chinese units as it is hard to connect the Chinese filters to a foster without using them.

It's really tough fitting all of this stuff together with the NPT, BSPP, BSPT, as well as the metric thread types.

Not sure there is a standard but I found the Foster and Ninja brands always play well together and seem to wear better than most. I expect the Parker fittings are good as well though. I also like to use stainless or steel fittings rather than the brass.

Anytime I see one of the safety posts I always go through and check my equipment. Last time I did so I found I was using a Parker 2500 psi female foster so replaced it immediately. Also noticed wear on one of my male fosters so I replaced it as well. So, these kinds of posts are a good thing.

Still, since most of the China made units don't fit together with the Foster fittings made elsewhere I have had to get creative here and there with what I use. So, I have one nickle plated brass Foster branded female fitting on my set up. It does have the six bearings in it though.

So, in the end, I have managed to at least make the last three feet of my fill system, which I am handling when filling, all with trusted name brand fittings, and a hose, that are in good shape. Although that may not seem like much it was actually not an easy task.

Fitting on my 2 year old Crown was getting hard to latch.

Very good information !!! After I read the article I started checking my fittings and discovered a missing ball on the new extended quick disconnect I just purchased for my FX.

Also, after seeing a photo of a brass female quick disconnect that burst (stainless outer ring, balance brass), I will only use 100% stainless steel now. I don't know where they get some of these pressure ratings but I don't believe brass disconnects have sufficient safety factor for PCP use. Just my opinion.

Interesting finding all of my "In-use" QD connection Female fittings are either FOSTER or HANSON

ALL have 6 ball retention collars.

The Stainless ones are a more compact, thinner body & QD collar than the Brass ones ( Brass are Foster branded BTW )

Guess I need to go look up "FOSTER" and see where these Stainless & Brass versions are rated at ? They all interchange and connect up with all my Males in use w/o issue.

Have had some unknown male fittings that indeed were just a smidge oversize not allowing FM QD attachment with the Foster or Hansons.

Beware, there are a lot of foster quick disconnect fittings selling on Amazon which are of unknown origin and questionable quality. Here is one particular seller that has several errors in the product description which makes me believe it is all BS.

The Amazon seller is IORMAN. I suspect the product is coming from China.

The product is described as Pure Copper, Rated 3000 to 5000 psi, Temperature Resistance: 2000°C.

They just make this stuff up. I love that Temperature rating !!!

Give it a couple of years and it will be a de facto standard!

Hot crank is on the left, car throttle on the right and so on, you get the pic.

Look at a Model T and then look at a 1918 Cadillac (less than 20 years development), suddenly we today can recognise the cockpit for the most part 100 years later.

PCP guns are still in it'sinfancy and in the last decade, vast leaps has been made. Lets see what will happen in the next decade.
