How to clean a HW44 barrel with the dedicated moderator on it?

I don't have one "yet", but since I always clean a new barrel, and as needed, I'm a little hesitant of buying a HW44 because of the fixed mod. I'm not sure if a straw is the best method, but since the mod will not come off, I would hate to have a patch get hung up and damage some plastic baffles in there. The straw may work with a loose patch, but if it's really snug enough to do the job it would be my luck for it to get good and stuck. Any thoughts?

I'm sure Weihrauch knows what it is doing, but the moderator is only hanging on to the barrel by 1/2 an inch and that's a press and pinned fit, not threaded. If the barrel was threaded and I could stick on a DonnyFL TANTO or TATSU, I would probably have the check in the mail.
 
Thanks for the replies. I guess if I pull a patch with something like the Patchworm through the bore and into a straw, I could just pull everything out and not need to pull the patch through the straw.

Yup, that's what I do. It works well. It does not go inside the straw. Even with a loop system, like fishing line, the straw will catch enough of the patch to stop it from falling into the baffles.

While I haven't gone so far as to measure straw sizes. Wendy's has 2 different sizes and 7-11 has big bore sizes near the slurpee machine! lol

bandg... do you have a HW44 and does the end cap come off? If you can get the internals out of the mod, that would be very nice. It's not like I would want to clean them, but when I take off the mod on my Impact X there is a lot of loose dust in there, and it would make cleaning the barrel very easy. (Maybe that's why they're called LDC's!)

If you do have one... is it fairly quiet? Any opinions or observations would be appreciated.

Steve.B... I asked this question before I bought a HW44. New ones from US dealers like AOA, or PA come with "fixed" moderators. They are pinned and not held in place with removable grub screws. You can unscrew the entire moderator from the permanently attached "boss" that will remain on the barrel. It looks fine that way but I still shoot it with the mod in place. I actually prefer this method as you never have to worry about a loose screw misaligning the mod. Very quiet, accurate and fun to shoot. I have a 2-7X32 Burris pistol scope on mine.

I have a US HW44 and they are not "pinned" even though they appear to be. They are installed with set screws that shear off the top part so they cannot be undone. You can notch them with a dremel and they will unscrew very easily. Then you can replace with a normal hex head set screw.

Before I figured out the above I unscrewed the front of the moderator, removed the baffles, and cleaned out the barrel. Just put back together and done.

The HW44 with moderator is the quietest airgun I own. 775fps with JSB 8.44 and if you didn't hear the pellet hit something you might not know it went off.

I'm not understanding how you could "notch them with a dremel" since the sheared off screw (or pin or whatever is used) is down inside a very small hole. I drilled and removed mine with reverse twist drill bits and one needed heat and an extractor to get out. They can be removed and it is not particularly difficult but my understanding is that all versions purchased in the US will have "non-tamper" fixation, probably thanks to government regulation.

I used a very tiny dremel bit and cut a slot for a flathead and then just unscrewed them. No locktite or glue of any kind.

I have been following thread because I have a friend that was buying one

I know the thread on how to clean the barrel with the LDC but morph into getting the LDC off

so I emailed him the info I read and the thread

and he emailed me today with a picture of the pistol with the LDC set next to it

the report from him it was dead quiet when installed, loud with it off and the trigger is great as well as very accurate

so after some more emails he did not take the set screws out, he just unscrewed the tube from the rear cap mount
