How Much do the JSB .25 Exact King Diabolo Pellets "really weigh"? I know...

Got the new Gemini-20 scale this week and just had to start weighing pellets. I washed two tins of pellets the week before and decided to take a lesson from Tom and some of the others on this forum and sort my pellets by weight. I was surprised by the results....then again, not really too much. Here are the results.

The JSB tin says the pellets are 6.35mm head diameter and the weight is 25.39grain (gr). 350 pellets per tin. 2 tins were weighed.

3.62% weighed less than 25.09 grain
9.21% weighed between 25.10 and 25.19 grain
20.91% weighed between 25.20 and 25.29 grain
29.20% weighed between 25.30 and 25.39 grain
24.43% weighed between 25.40 and 25.49 grain
14.6% weighed between 25.50 and 25.59 grain
6.94% weighed between 25.60 and 25.69 grain
1.45% weighed more than 25.7 grain
EDIT: (Pic was taken after 1 tin was weighed)

Summary of weights, approx 53.5% are within 0.4% of the advertised weight, is this close enough? (we shall see)

Is it worth taking the time to weigh? It took me about an hour to weigh one tin of 350 pellets while watching (more like listening) to TV. I will start shooting these sorted pellets next week and will report back my findings.

Yeah, those are pretty close to my numbers as well...

2 tins, 702 pellets
under 25.3 = 136 (19.37%)
25.3 = 110 (15.67%)
25.4 = 153 (21.79%)
25.5 = 96 (13.68%)
over 25.5 = 59 (8.4%)
Defects (subjective) = 148 (21.08%)

That means, 359 of 702 (51.14%) passed through my inspection & weighing process and will move on to the next stage. Pretty darn close to the number you got!
Good luck with the rest of your journey down the rabbit hole! ;)

Pretty much what I found as well. I wash first then weigh keeping 25.0 to 25.2 separate from 25.3 to 25.5 the anything over 25.5 in their own tin. I will mention the last lot I got from Utah Airguns were the best I have weighed yet, I would estimate over 70% were between 25.3 - 25.5. I bought a mag for my AW from D-Rig and he sent me 50 lubed and sized pellets to test along with some 33 grain HP he makes. I am anxious to try these. Raining here so the test will have to wait ;(

I shot the sorted pellets today.....
In the world of experimentation there is a term that I think fits my results.....simply......inconclusive, at least at 30yards.

Let me summarize my process. Two guns were used, .25Bobcat and .25 Vulcan. I grabbed three tins of the weight sorted tins. <25.1gr,..... 25.4gr,...... >25.6gr.
I filled my Bobcat .25 to 220Bar and shot off 5 rounds to get the regulator adjusted to the new fill. Point of Aim (POA) is the bulls eye (BE)
I started with the <25.1gr, which is the lightest category that I sorted.

The results are the center bull in the pic. The three shots were slightly above the BE, so I thought hey we might be on to something here.

Next three shots are with the Bobcat using the pellets that weighed in excess of 25.6grains.

First shot was below the BE, ok this seems to be promising, these are the heaviest pellets out of two tins....then the next two shots were high....bummer blew that theory.

I shot a couple more groups with mixed results but the results are still inconclusive with these two pellet groups of the lightest and the heaviest.
So I then used the Bobcat to shoot the middle of the group pellets which are the 25.4grain.

These results were nice to see and somewhat repeatable since I have more of these pellets than I do of the two extreme weights of pellets.
This particular group is 5 shots all in the same ragged hole using the 25.4grain

Then I decided to get the Vulcan out and try the same group tests with it. Only problem is I am out of the pellets in excess of 25.6grain, so I can only shoot the pellets with a weight less than 25.1grain and the pellets that weigh 25.4 grain.

First up with the Vulcan is the 25.4grain. I did shoot 5 shots before this group to get the gun warmed up. Pictured is a group of 5 shots. I also filled it to 220bar prior to the shooting.

I then loaded up the less than 25.1grain pellets and shot 5 in this group. 4 are pretty much in the same hole with one to the right.

So I'm thinking the Vulcan really likes these 25.1grain pellets, so then I load up the 25.4 and shoot 5 shots in the pic below.

So that is pretty much 4 in the same hole and one just outside to the left.
I won't bore you with the pics of those shots between the 25.1 and the 25.4 as they pretty much repeat the two examples above. I am now out the two extreme weighted groups, so until I sort more pellets I can't get back to my experimentation, but I must say I am happy with the Vulcans groups and would say they are as good as they need to be. The Bobcat is going to require some more experimentation and maybe who knows, I might find a perfect weight of pellet that it really, really likes? I hope so. I will continue shooting these sorted pellets thru these two guns and the FX streamline, if anything interesting happens I will post.

My question to you more experienced sorters is: "Does sorting head size and weight, make a marked difference in your POA vs POI and if so at what distances and what weights and head sizes do you prefer?" Thanks guys!!

good stuff! some think that heavier pellet may leave with slower fps but then it has better BC, or the opposite the lighter will leave the barrel faster but drop/slow down faster too.
others think that there is some kind of self regulating mechanism still going on within the gun involving the pellet too.

if you have a bad barrel, no matter how you sort the pellets, they will be poor no matter what you do
