HOT Impact flinging slugs. What's your favorite .30 gr?

I've got this .30 Impact setup for flinging slugs now and it's doing a phenomenal job IMHO.

It's been worked over pretty good, but is just a humble gen 1. Ernest did the port work and as you can see it's got the big bottle and 700mm slug barrel. It will go into FX to get the new plenum upgrade when my turn comes, but in the meantime I need to choose a slug for it. I've also got Neil Clague working on a new 1 piece shroud/LDC.

I bought a pack of each of the 65.5gr, 61.5gr and 54.5gr from NSA. All fit the FX mag. The 65.5 won't fit the Sideshot mag. The 65.5 seems a little slow in the 880s, the 61.5 is in the 910s and the 54.5 is in the 930s. The 65.5 seems to fit the FX mag the best and feeds the best. The others are kind of loose in the mag, not horrible, but not as nice as the 65.5.

I shot them all and the 61.5 and 54.4 are grouping under a dime at 75-85 yds with the occasional flyer. Didn't put much time into the 65.5gr, but it doesn't seem to perform as well. This may be the nut behind the trigger problem tho. Most of the time I'm punching the center out of the bull.

I've got the reg around 150bar and everything else turned up too.

Going down to an event on the 22nd and need to settle on a slug to buy in qty as we shoot all day there. Looking for some feedback from those of you who are into this HOT setup territory and what you find works the best.

Thanks in advance.

I recently called Ernest about seeing what he, or anyone could gain by full through porting my FX Elite & valve.
He said all FX valves are the same and I’d only gain 50fps. Now I have no idea about new FX rifles and don’t want one. Just wondering what you gained when he did your valve. I understand the plenum, new bigger power plenum. Older ones like mine don’t have a large blast chamber/plenum.

Just curious if you remember the gain.

In .30 cal you'll get much better performance with the larger eccentric plenum produced in Poland (both are my design). You won't gain anything by combining the eccentric plenum with the external unless you move up to .35 cal. The older rubber ball valve control works better than the spring in the FX plenum kit also.

If you want the Polish plenum be sure to buy directly from Michal in Poland for $150 shipped and install it yourself. If you need free help installing it just PM me here.

Ideal valve area would be slightly over bore size but making the valve larger won't help until you remove all downstream restrictions. The trick is to get the air around turns smoother and faster.

I’m shooting 48 and 50 grs Varmint Knockers slugs around 930 fps with very good accuracy at 50 yards. I have 700mm slug liner with FX power plenum and some modification on the springs and hammer. My gun now set up to shoot 50 grs. just over 1000 fps and my reg set at 165bar. Both slugs fits magazines nicely with no issues so far. Will do some accuracy testing with that speeds soon.

I cut off 3 recoil on VA spring this will help hammer to open up the valve at higher reg pressure. For the hammer spring I added C3 bumper between hammer and hammer weight to give more tension.

The eccentric plenums from Poland and FX. The design was copied from a CAD drawing I posted here in April of last year.

Some keyboard warriors claim to have knowledge on the subject but have no clue whatsoever, they just like to pretend they're important and suck up to fx techs.

Shot some more yesterday between the rain drops.

IDK which slug to choose. In the ideal world I'd be flinging the 65.5 at 950fps, but the power just isn't there. And oddly, the fps I'm flinging all them at is lower than what it was the previous outing. Doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere so I'm kinda mystified. My friend was here and he says he remembers them going faster.

Seems to max out w/ the reg at 150bar. I fiddled with the hammer spring tension too and can't get it to come up any by tightening it, so I put it back to where FX had it.

The 65.5 is in the 850-860 range.

The 61.5 is down in the 880s, I know for fact this was higher a couple weeks ago.

The 54.5 is at 930, solidly. Right where it was before.

At 75yds, the 65.5 needs 1.5 mil of holdover from a zero at 50yds. The 54.5 only needs 1 mil of holdover, similarly zeroed at 50yds.

I'm a little baffled by some of this.

Makes me wonder about my barrel assembly. I couldn't get the breach end of the barrel to unscrew like it says in the instructions so I slipped the whole assy in from the other end. Makes me wonder if I rolled the o-ring off where the liner seats into the breech piece. Doesn't seem to be leaking anywhere, but I don't think the leak path would allow me to notice something odd anyway.

Anyway, to bring this thread back on topic, I ordered 2x packs of each from NSA: 49.5, 54.5, 61.5 and 65.5. That should be enough to get me thru the day in Cross on the 22nd.

Not sure what to do on this Plenum topic. I was under the impression that FX's other internals would amp up the performance of the gun and the Plenum would help even more. I'm pretty sure FX will do a power tune on the gun if I request it. I'd send in w/ the 65.5gr and ask them to tune it for 950fps and see what they can do. Is that even possible w/ this setup?

edosan, what speed are you flinging the 65.5 at? Someone said I need to be in the 950s, I'm no where close to that.

You should be good at lower velocities. My MKII was accurate with them from 850-920. FWIW, my R5 shoots them well as low as 770-825FPS

@monstermaxx sorry for the delay (I usually stay away from cry babies .. jaja not you) , yeah 850 and up should be fine. I can shoot those over 1.000 fps but best accuracy is in 900ish range IME. If you ask me if the slug fly ok over 800fps, then choose the one is more accurate in the barrel/liner u use.

I bought an Impact that came with a .25 and.30 pellet barrel. Don't see much use for the .30 pellet barrel since there aren't any expanding pellets out there that work with it. I was originally thinking of just selling the .30 and getting a .25 slug liner but now you have me thinking I should get the .30 slug liner instead. I've already got a few guns that shoot .25 NSA slugs well...nothing in .30.

@Monstermaxx did you get the speed difference worked out? With the sudden drop off in speed and no more power after 150 bar on the regulator I think it is something to do with the hammer, spring area. Usually when speed drops off like that it is because of the C3 o-ring going bad. But in your case, because of the mods by Ernest, I would think that it has been changed out to some type of solid delrin plastic washer instead of the rubber o-ring? The speed difference between the two weeks could be lead in the barrel too, but probably not the o-ring you mentioned. The MK1 should still increase speed with reg pressure increase, especially with the port mod. But this is still dependant on the size of the valve seat. That should be 6.3mm or bigger. 6.5-7mm showing the best gains out of the box with not mods.

I got 2 packs of each slug for the Impact and I am going down to the club tomorrow and will be putting it thru the paces. The Impact and a HW98 are going to get wrung out tomorrow. Hopefully get to the bottom of all of it, the '98 has never behaved well.

Supposed to be a sunny day, if a bit chilly. Should be a lot of fun. I'll report back what I find.
