Hope I've finally found the ONE

I've been playing with these thru the scope camera's for a while now. I've spent a bunch of money and haven't achieved what I'm looking for.

I've got two side shot devices. One for the go pro and another for the I phone. The go pro is just OK. It's tricky to focus and I find it not as clear as I think it should be. Perhaps it's the scope and not the camera. I'm using a Nikon Black which is a medium priced scope. I also doing like the fact that you can not zoom in much with the go pro. It's an extremely expensive rig. $1200 go pro hero 7 black with the recommended lens.

The side shot set up using the I phone Xs is better in some respects. I'm having a problem with the camera on the I phone not wanting to look thru the side shot. I've posted on another thread about that. BUT if I can get it functioning correctly I believe there is potential for this to be better then the go pro. It's larger and a little harder to use but I think there is potential for the video's to be better.

I just ordered a tactacam 5.0 I'm hoping this will be the NUTS.

I see what others are posting using some of this stuff and I just can't get results. I'm not real techno savvy so it could be me.

Anyone else finding some of the same? Maybe I'm just being to fussy . I've seen Bob O's video's and I can't come close. Of course he's shooting thru a Nightforce scope I believe. That might be part of it. Thoughts.

I think you will be pleased with the Tactacam 5.0. If you've followed me at all, you know that I can be...rather hard to please.😉 When I put down my hard-earned 💲💲, I expect the product to live up to its advertisers' claims.

The scope-mounted Tactacam 5.0 is easy to mount and the picture/recordings are clear with fine audio. Mine is mounted on an NF NX8 and the POI is precise and totally unimpeded by the camera.

I will update this. I worked all day on this stuff. Here’s what I’ve figured. The I phone Xs just will not work with the side shot. I think it’s because it has two camera lens which means you can’t line up behind the prism on the side shot. Maybe some one more familiar with the phones can expand on this.. if you notice on the newest phones they all seem to have more then one lens opening. I suspect there are a number of phone / cameras that are not going to work. unless there is something I don’t know or understand. I tried to put a 2 X lens on this phone and it did the same thing. Doesn’t like to be up close to a device. I think with the right phone and a remote shutter the side shot / phone camera can do pretty well. Still takes some finagling but more intuitive then the go pro.

with the go pro. It’s tricky to focus and I suspect you are going to need a real high quality scope to get high magnification videos. The hero 7 backbone camera does not zoom much . I think for larger game at average distances this would work fine. If you want extreme close ups this isn’t the answer. I’m not satisfied at all with the go pro system. For the money it’s not doing it for me. It’s possible I haven’t figured the system completely. It’s not intuitive in its operation. For $1200 I expected a lot more. It’s only advantage is it’s small ( that I can see)

I’m looking forward to the tactacam Having watched the video’s in SEEMS more intuitive (simpler). I’ll see how good the videos will next week.

I 73 and this computer based stuff does challenge me some.

I haven’t even started video editing. That will probably be even more of a challenge for me.

OK. I got the tactacam device this morning. First impressions. It's the thing to have for those of us who are not very techno savvy.

Optically it's plug and play and VERY clear video's.

It still requires some careful reading (and understanding of the directions) but it's certainly easier. All of this stuff is confusing to me because assumptions are made that you have some understanding. I need hand holding. A ten year old kid would probably figure this stuff out in minutes it takes me hours if not days. Its simple stuff that can get you screwed up. You have to charge the battery (which is to be expected) my battery didn't charge because it need to be pushed into the device I swear a 1/16 of an inch. Don't know if that was left that way intentionally or not but if it was wouldn't you think THAT THEY WOULD TELL YOU THAT ?

I've got a small fortune in this video equipment and they are all good. The side shot with the I phone is very versatile and probably the best if you want to really get up close. Just because of the capabilities of the phone camera. Once I got the phoneskope app it solved my issues with the camera not staying focused. (Who would know about that fortunately one of the other guys on the form told me.) Maybe it common knowledge. Not to me.

The side shot with the go pro. It's good once you get it set up and focused and it's big advantage is it's small and probably pretty rugged. I found it hard to figure out and more complicated probably because it's adapting a system that's not just for our particular use. I've not been able to get my videos as clear and as perfect as I think they should be. Your results may differ.

I also have a ATN night vision system and my thoughts on that are: If you need it for low light/night stuff it's fine. BUT it's a big beast of a thing and for day light use it just doesn't compare. I'll probably keep it because I just might want to shoot at night but it's not much good for anything else. It too is frustratingly complex to set up and use (or it was for me) Mounting it is some what difficult. It challenged me to get it back close enough to my eye on the gun. I think it's good for what it's intended use is.

This stuff will probably change as this stuff tends to do. The tactacam is designed for this use which I think is why it's my pick. You're not compromising something to make it work.

I would not discourage any one from buying any of the video devices I've reviewed but to summarize. The go pro at $1200 is hard to justify. Unless you would want to use the camera for other things. Then maybe.

The side shot phone thing is probably as good as what is needed and it's a good second place finisher

The tactacam is my pick. Good value for the money. Relatively simple to use ( I'm sure it will become second nature with use) Video's are the best I've been able to produce and it's also a nice compact device.

I'd be interested in hearing what others think if they have had the opportunity to use any of these.

If any one has questions about particular's I'd be glad to answer

do these cameras make slow motion?

For slow motion you just film at a higher frame rate, for example 60fps or 120fps, the GoPro is able to record in 240fps (insane)

When you look at the footage on the computer it will look like regular speed but that clip has a lot of frames in one secod, so in the editing software you can slow it down and the more frames per second used to record the more fluid the slow motion will look.

What I'm saying is you won't get slow motion out of the box, you need to edit the video and slow it down...

I'm done holding off and doing without a scope camera for shooting videos. I wanted the $1200 GoPro Side-Shot so bad I could taste it, but waited to see what developed with a DIY GoPro version with the Side-Shot housing, as the $1200, while understandable with the BackBone H7PRO camera, was just a bit more than I really wanted to spend, especially with new tech release on the horizon. Then I waited because I new the HERO 8 would be coming out. Then when it did, it was a different form-factor, so that meant waiting for new physical case mechanics. Then I started watching the Tactacam 5.0 w/FTS, but I had one issue... I wanted 240 fps at 1080P. Only the GoPro HERO 7 seemed to provide that. Tatctacam 5.0 only has 240 fps in 720P. Then prices started coming down a little on the Tactacam 5.0 w/FTS. Why? Probably because the Tactacam 6.0 is just around the corner, knowing my luck (this is only speculation, but from the guy who received his brand new Impact MKII just ONE day before the Power Plenum announcement was released).

Well, I hope all the decent reviews many of you have been giving the Tactacam 5.0 w/FTS are as good as they sound, because I now have one setting next to my Impact MKII. I sure hope it fits my Hawke scope alright. I found a pawn shop about 30 miles from me listed on the Tactacam website dealer locator. I think they have decided to not restock it, but had one unopened kit available, and matched the current $429 price, plus sold me their last 4 new/unopened batteries for $10 each. So, a brand new Tactacam 5.0 w/FTS and a total of 5 batteries for $502 out the door after tax. Seemed reasonable to me. I figure if the Tactacam 6.0 comes out at near the same price point, and it has the 240 fps at 1080P I so badly want, I can get it, then my wife and I BOTH have scope cams, and I still have less in them than a single H7PRO GoPro Side-Shot rig. Although, I gotta say I like the mechanics of that Side-Shot GoPro system.

Thanks for all the feedback on the Tactacam system. Now, wish me luck!

I think a good combination might be the SideShot GoPro 3/4 mount with a FireFly 8SE. I think that's what AirHunters is using. I really like my FireFly with my PhoneSkope GoPro mount, super clear, just drop the camera in and start shooting. The reason I say the SideShot might be a good option is that the camera fits closer to the scope but there is no adjustability for that distance like the PhoneSkope has. I don't know how critcal that might be though. I know you can get the SS mount for $239 and the FireFly for under $150. Just an idea.
