Homemade steel Target Trap - Input/opinions -

If you don't plan on reusing the lead, what do you guys do with it? Trashing it does not sound very environmentally friendly. Sending it somewhere would be rather expensive.

For me, I plan to cast some into a couple 'bricks' for my kids as a remembrance of one of my favorite things. All from personally used pellets. I only capture a fraction of my shot lead but I'm getting close to 30lbs collected so I'm also getting close to getting a melting pot and figuring out how to cast a couple of bricks. Beyond that effort, I'll give it away to a local shooter that casts at home.

Recycling is a crap shoot these days but lead is something that can be re-used and is appreciated by those who would otherwise be melting wheel weights and the like. If my current project works out well, I may invest in another steel plate and do the same kind of thing for my main range at 75y, that would dramatically increase my ability to save the lead.

I didn't get far the past 2 days, other things took priority. But got far enough to figure out the rest. I keep making it 'more bigger' as I go 😁. Couple of uprights to support the plate and a little more to add to it. Like a couple of pieces of angle iron to protect the edges and maybe some flat steel to line the wood behind where the AR plates will be hung. Tomorrow is mine other than some grass cutting. Wife will be focused on getting her kids ready for back to school on Tuesday. It's getting heavy so good thing I have the tractor....

I posted the build on this trap months ago. All welded with 1/4” plate steel. Weighs in at approx 60-65 lbs. it’s approx. 13” x 13” x 6” deep, with a 10” x 11” clear opening to suit popular shoot n see and Caldwell targets. If the target exceeds the 10 x 11 opening I use the round earth magnets to hold it, if it is under that 10 x 11 opening I use the magnetized clips.

I originally had one designed exactly like this with the carry handle and back support legs, using a NEMA 16 ga electrical pull box, but my 30 caliber air rifles beat it up way bad. Those same pellets at 80 ft lbs won’t even touch this trap, like bugs on a windshield, really.

i lined my new trap with 7 lbs of duct seal. Oh, when shooting thru a chronograph into these traps with the muzzle only two feet away, I had to clamp my electrical box trap to the table cause it would still tilt backwards with the shot energy. With my steel plate trap, it doesn’t even budge, but I still clamp it regardless. Safety first, lol
