Homemade Splatter Targets

I got the idea for homemade targets from this forum and did some research on the internet and came up with this reusable splatter targets for cheap. It starts with a foam camping pad(under $8), fluorescent duct tape and $1 spay paint from Walmart.

I cut the camping pad to fit in my plywood pellet trap and covered it with duct tape. Then I cut some squares of duct tape for bullseyes and put them on parchment paper for painting with a contrasting color. I had some orange fluorescent paint that worked great. It's kind of tricky to cut squares of tape so this part could use some improvements.

The final product looks like this.

And it works great! The holes without splatter are from the first session. When it gets too cluttered, just repaint with black and stick on more bulleyes. Lather. Rinse. Repeat. The cheap flat black paint from WM dries quickly so it is easy to do in the middle of a plinking session or better yet, I will be able to make several of these from just one camping pad and rotate them.

Please ignore the group size! I am in the middle of trying to tune my M-Rod. It's a work in progress.

Nice!

This is a slightly different approach to the “more common” one of putting clear packing tape on a fluorescent piece of cardboard. But looking at the pictures your execution works great too! The only difference seems that the splatters are a little larger with your approach, but thus is not a negative per se (especially not with iron sights and aging eyes at longer ranges!) The biggest advantage of your way seems that the camping mat is a sort of “self healing” type of target, so you only have to respray it to reuse (whereas with the tape on cardboard you first have to patch the holes with a piece of tape before you can respray to reuse)

After reading your post I needed to try this myself. So off to Walmart when they opened early this morn. Astrobrights neon cardstock. (50) 8.5x11" sheets for $3. $1 black spray paint can. $2.87 for 30 yards of clear packing tape. And I had some white spray paint. Cover each sheet with packing tape. Spray paint black. Spray a white dot in middle. I used an aluminum stove burner cover for the outline of center white dot to avoid overspray. The targets worked fantastic! This was the result with a 9mm handgun at 10, 15, 20, & 25 yards.
