Homemade Pellet Trap

Got a good start on a pellet trap for the backyard today. 24" x 48". Shooting a Pro Sport .22 springer for now. Haven't decided if I'm going to cover the back with sheet steel and/or plywood and just stuff some bags of rubber nugget mulch in the back. I've seen folks hang that 1/4" thick rubber mat stuff as a curtain but I don't know where to find it. I need to call my local range and ask who their supplier is.

I used a 1/4" steel plate in mine. These guns have some power. The Square one has the 1/4" plate. And the Flat one has a 1/8" steel plate.
The square one is at a 45 degree angle. The thing with the one was it would deflect the pellets doan so eventually the pellets made a hole in the bottom of the Target.
Hard to re-enforce the bottom with sheet metal and Duct seal.

Well I modified the trap somewhat. Cut the angled back off of it to make a regular box. I found 2 sizes of rubber mat at Tractor Supply, 1/2" and 3/4". Bought 1 sheet of the 3' x 4', 1/2" stuff. Cut 2 sheets to size and hung them like a curtain. Left the back removable to help facilitate curtain install and removal. I took the left over piece out back to my current shooting area and shot it from 17 yards to see what a 14.3gn pellet traveling at 662 fps will do to it. Stopped it before the skirt penetrated all the way.

I set up the mat hang system so I could hang 2 mat curtains if I had to, but looks like 1 is going to be enough for now. We'll have to see what a PCP fired pellet will do later if I ever move up to one.

On the left side I'll attach a target backer, something to affix targets to. The right side I was thinking of placing hanging targets, spoons and such, and use it as a backstop for my steel squirrel target and the like, in case of misses.

I just need to mount some handles and brush it down with Thompsons Water Seal and it will be ready to go.

"Uglyjohn"Nice work! How did you cut the rubber mat panels to size? I have a sheet of 3/4" from TS and have tried a couple of methods of cutting it to fit with limited success. As Dad used to say "that stuff us tougher than the hubs of hell". Uj
Used a very sharp box cutter knife. Laid a 1 x 4 down as a straight edge and score at least half way thru or better. Flip the mat over, folding at the cut line opens it up and allows you to finish the cut easier.
