Homemade cheek rest for Taipan Veteran

Hey guys, here’s another small project I’ve been wanting to do for the past year, making a cheek rest for my Veteran. Never liked the cold metal on cheek, especially in winter. I got this idea from another member here PHeplerNC, and also Doug from Maddogrifle stocks, I borrowed his magnet design he uses in his Marauder bullpup cheek rest, thanks for the inspiration guys! I bought the product Instamorph moldable plastic about a year ago and finally had time to try it out. First one I tried to make looked like a real turd so I tried again and this is how it turned out, still looks like a turd but it works. 😃

Basically heat the beads up and shape them, I kept reheating over and over trying to get it right shape and size, actually cutting off a piece at one point to keep it the right size. Got it to a rectangular piece then pressed and shaped over the action where it would sit. Got to be careful not to overheat, it’s a process of trial and error. I glued two small powerful magnets in to keep it in place and make it extremely easy to remove. I might try to make another one that’s a bit more sleeker as this does raise the cheek weld little. Not too bad though, I just have to research if I can sand this smooth or not. Thanks for looking.

I use a cheek pad from here and cut to fit whatever airgun I'm putting it on: http://www.hopticusa.com/product-page/desert-tech-saddle-blankets - the MDR version on this link is the one I use. It's designed for rifles, but works perfectly for airguns. It's 1/8" Polyethylene padded Cheek rest, very comfortable and easy to apply.

Currently got on on my Bantam Brocock, and I'm about to put one on my Taipan.

Thanks for all responses guys, and thanks Davecole for the +1, I hope anyone that tries using this will post some pics, hopefully it comes out better than mine. As an afterthought,I think using some kind of mold to press moldable plastic into and shape would have better results and look more professional.

I actually think kthomas has a good solution, I’m gonna try this also, I’m assuming this is some kind of adhesive that holds this in place?

Kaeokini, I have the R5 also, I wanted to make cheekrest for it also, not sure there is enough metal under aluminum to get magnets to stick. I’m gonna try kthomas idea for it.

Papy-yosh I’m still not sure this material can be sanded, I haven’t researched yet. As far as placing magnets, there is only a short area on the action that is metal underneath where magnets will stick, my placement of magnets is in third picture from top. I think 3D printing or one made from wood would have better looking smooth results.

This is exactly what I've been looking for... but $15 for 2 tiny pieces of foam??? I'd rather buy a sheet of something similar and cut to shape. Any leads?

As promised, here are pictures of the HopticUSA cheek pieces trimmed and installed on the Taipan Veteran. I did rush this job a little bit and definitely didn't take the time or effort to make it look a little better, but I'm a function over form guy anyways.

I just free hand cut the pieces with a pair of scissors. With a straight edge and scissors or a scalpel, you can make it much nicer.
