H&N Field Target Trophy and my Sig Sauer ASP20

I've been reading where a few AGN members have had good results with the 14.66 gr. H&N FTT pellet. Got my tin today so I had some time to play ! First thing I did was weigh them. They are heavier than their rated weight of 14.66 gr. Very few weighted in at 14.7 gr. Most were in the 14.8 to 14.9 range. All my chronograph and accuracy testing today was done with pellets weighing 14.8 gr. I chronographed pellets sized (.217" die), and unsized, deep seated, and flush seated. No real difference noticed between seating depth or sizing vs. unsizing this pellet. I liked sizing though because it was easier not to distort the lead skirt inserting it into the tight bore of the ASP20. The velocity of 830 fps was better than expected and tells me this pellet is quite efficient in this rifle. I have shot the 14.5 gr RWS Superdome pellet that averaged about 825 fps. Or the 14.3 gr Crosman Premiers that average 835 fps. I plan on doing more testing with the heavier pellets ( 14.9 to 15.0 gr ) in this tin of H&N's and sizing with my .220" die.

Enough blabbering and lets talk accuracy with the H&N pellet. Distance was 30ft and pellets were sized and seating just until they snapped in with the ball end of my seating tool. The first group was before resting the butt end of my stock on a bag. Only shot 3 shots before I said " something ain't right here " ! I then shot the 5 shot group on the right taking everything that I learned from Tom Gaylord into account. The good old artillery hold ! This gun will do even better once I can shoot from a comfortable bench instead of two chairs and sitting in a very uncomfortable position. I got to say that I am liking this Sig more and more .

The paper plate target.

You didn't say what dia. head you were shooting. My Gamo mach 1 shoots the 5.53mm very well but first shot or two are always a little low.

The tin says 5.5mm but most cans say that. That is the standard millimeter designation for the .22 cal. Here's a pic. I'm a little low at 30ft because it's pretty much dialed in at 40ft.

Look on the back of the tin. There is a white sticker with the head size printed on it. Good grouping you achieved with them. I am having really good results with them in the 5.53 head size. It's ironic you sharing the results from weighing the pellets. I spent this afternoon weighing an entire tin of them as well. Same thing that you found for the most part. The over whelming majority of mine weighed 14.8 gr with quite a few around 15 grains. There were a small amount around the 14.7 grain range. I've separated them and am going to shoot the 14.8 grain pellets next day I get to shoot. Narrowing it down to a consistent weight should help tighten groups.

That is my line of thinking as well. Consistent weights should result in better groups. My tin as well had a few that went 15 gr.

I weighed a total of 36 of the H&N pellets today. Eight were 14.7 gr. Fourteen were 14.8 gr. Fourteen were 14.9 gr.

Did some chrony testing today with the 14.9 gr pellets. Weather was 56deg , RH 31% (dry), BP 29.77 inch/hg.

I wanted to compare the .217" die results of yesterday to my .220" sizing die. The .220" gave a slight edge in performance. Shot 4 shots sized to .220". Two shots deep seated and two shallow. No difference between seating depth. Three shots at 830 fps and one at 831 fps. Same as yesterday but pellet 1/10 th of a grain heavier. Energy was 22.8 ft/lbs. I can't seem to quite get the 23 ft/lb energy rating for this gun. Maybe when the weather gets warmer with higher Barometric pressures I will get that 23 ft/lb rating.
