H&N 27g & 30g Testing

This is kind of a continuation of another thread. It was not my thread and needs to have a fresh start. Here is the link to the previous thread if you are interested. https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/hn-slugs-first-thoughts-did-i-get-defects/#post-621224 .So a long story short I bought 1200 27g .217 slugs, 400 27g .218 slugs, 400 30g .217 slugs. Typically my gun shoots .218 better in small slugs and .217 in the heavier slugs. To say the least these slugs were nasty with lots of oil and lead pieces so I washed them and re-lubed them, see the first thread for details. OK so now the slugs are clean and re-lubed. I am shooting these out of a .22 FX Impact X with a few mods and a 700mm barrel with slug liner. I will try to update this as I go but I work a lot so may be kinda slow. Today on my work bench and a 9" thick block of wood I picked the 27g .217 slugs to set a base fps. I set the base fps at 963 fps and tuned it down to 946 with the valve stop, right at the center of the 3rd line. The reg set at 123 bar and the power wheel on 5, max is maxed out so I like to work with 5 so I can go up or down with the power wheel. I set up for 30 yds. My goal was to shoot one 5-shot group with all 3 sizes and go from there. I was very pleased with the results. The wind was blowing 16 mph from my back at 30 degrees so I was shooting out of the garage to minimize the effect so probably 15 yds in that wind. The results were so good I just stopped there. I did not want to go out further in that wind or tune in it. I literally did not touch anything after the basic tune on the bench. Here are the pics.

I have never shot any slugs where I started at this point. I hope it all holds together out to 100 yds and tweak from there. So to be fair I am very mechanical but I am NOT a supper tuner. I am learning just like everyone else. I have not seen much on H&N slugs so I figured I would share this so we could all learn. FX slug reviews are everywhere. I have not bought any of those yet but they look very good also. Personally I like the price on the H&N slugs so I am very interested in making them work and my gun prefers heavier slugs. Please add any experiences you have with H&N slugs to date and we can update and learn at the same time. I would really like to see any expansion tests.

OK I wanted to shoot some control groups to compare to with the exact same settings, same 30 yds. shooting with bipod and bags. Just wanted to make sure I didnt just get lucky or maybe I did. I dont have many of any size slugs left but enough to make some 5-shot groups. So here they are with the same .366" washer.

The VKs were very good out of these groups. With tuning the Griffin 29g .217s have been my best slug so far. All these groups do have 5 shots. I have not shot the 34g Griffins, they were extras he through in but maybe I should. Just an FYI if you can get boat tails to shoot well out of your gun they do shoot faster with less power than slugs of the same weight due to the reduced contact surface. They do really well in the wind also.

OK back to the H&N slugs. Without changing anything I went out to 50 yds. I do agree with BobO to go straight to 100 yds but not an option at my house. That will have to happen when I get more time. I was hoping for better results but here they are.

So the 30g was the best group at 30 yds and 50 yds. I will tune with the 27g .217`s since that is what I have the most of. I did get to make a few real quick changes before it got dark. Here they are in the order of changes. I am sure I will need to increase the 123 bar.

They show real promise! All tuned shots are at 50 yds.

Did some more 50 yd. testing today. I took pics of the last adjustment. This is the same .366" washer I have been using.

For what I do this is way good enough for me. When I get a chance I will do 100 yds. and maybe 150. Most of my pesting is 50-80 yds. I have several opportunities to take farther shots. If I can get MOA or better at 100+ yds. consistently I would take those shots. I can do this with pellets all day long but this is my best slug performance so far.

OK I finally got a chance to do a 100, 150, and 200 yd. test. It was dead calm when I got off work so I flew home, threw my stuff in the truck and went to a place I could shoot. So I got there just before dark with a card table, bipod, and bean bags. I also brought an LED rechargeable spot light for when it got dark to shine on the target. Not the best conditions but not bad either. I shot 2-100 yard groups Saterday but it was windy so not a good example. One was 1 7/8" c/c and the other was 1 5/16 c/c.

I am OK with this. This is a 10 shot MOA group at 100 yds. Most people use 1" instead of the true 1.047" but either way.

I have never shot at this distance on paper so this is my best and worst group, lol. This was done in the total dark. I shoot 50 yds. in the dark all the time but this was a little tougher. It was hard to adjust my parallax. So I think these slugs are doing a good job. Remember card table on uneven ground but my gun was level.

200 yds. is a long way! I guess this is OK, it was shot in the dark also. I have shot some slugs that were not much better than this at 100 yds. I did all this testing with the size H&N that I have the most of, the 27g .217. If you read all of this or have been following you will remember the H&N 30g .217 was best at 30 and 50 yds. Just for the heck of it I will take this tune and compare the H&N 27g .217, H&N 27g .218, and the H&N 30g .217 at these distances when I get another calm day. Any comments would be great. It seemed to open up more from 100 yds. to 150 yds. than I thought it should have. Is this what most of you see. My tune may not be perfect and I sure am not.

I went out after work today and shot the H&N 27g .217, 27g .218, and H&N 30g .217 10 shot groups at 100 yds just to compare with the 27g .217 tune. There was a 9 mph 90 degree cross wind, not really gusting just steady. I knew the groups would loosen up but figured it would still be a good test. Most of all I wanted to know if the un-tuned 30gs would out preform the tuned 27s and Ill be $@#! if they did. The 27 .217s slightly out did the 27 .218s. The groups opened up in the wind on the 27 .217s to between 1.25" and 1.5" fairly scattered in those group. The 30s were 1 3/16 c/c but if you remove just one shot it goes down to 15/16, remove 3 shots and 7 were in a 3/8 group! This was supposed to be a thread about the H&N slugs and it is but I guess it is a little about the journey through the process for me also. So in conclusion I am very happy with these slugs but it looks like I will be shifting my efforts to the 30g .217s. Here is a pic of that 30g group.

The small group that looks like it has 5 shots does have 7 shots in it. 😊

Just wanted to update so other people doing research can have all the info possible. This is 3 months later. I am still using the 30g slugs with supper results. If the gun is turned perfect I get 3/8 c/c groups at 50 yds all day long, I have even got some 3 and 5 shot groups hole in hole at 50 yds. Anyway I just received 3200 of the 30g H&N’s yesterday. I was going to clean and lube them but they must have been listening to the reports about how nasty they were. They were very clean, no lead pieces, shiny, and lubed very well. I could not be happier.
