Short version:
JSB and others now offer very high mass and high ballistic coefficient .177 cal pellets and slugs. What are people's experiences shooting them? What barrels shoot them well? Any experiences with the FX STX liners? I'm thinking particularly JSB Exact Beast Diabolo .177 Cal Pellets, 16.20 Grains. What kind of shot count are you getting as compared to .22?
The long version:
Slugs and high sectional density pellets are all the rage. And that is great for us in that it allows better accuracy at distance with a fraction of the wind drift. However the big disadvantage is that slug guns in .22 and up tend to be air hogs. For those of us who like to pack light, myself included, the obvious solution is to roughly maintain kinetic energy by dropping down a caliber to .177. If you can get ~100 shots per fill, there is no need to huff along a spare cylinder, you can just grab your rifle and go.
Enter the JSB Exact Beast Diabolo .177 Cal, which is 16.20 grains. (https://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/JSB_Exact_Beast_Diabolo_177_Cal_Pellets_16_20_Grains_Domed_250ct/1197) At 900fps that produces 30 foot pounds, and has better sectional density than a .22.
Likewise Nielsen has a handful of slugs which also promise great sectional density and ballistic performance in .177 without consuming as much air. Details are a little sparse though on what exactly makes these run well. (https://nielsenspecialtyammo.com/collections/177-caliber)
So who has shot these, and in what rifles? Any experiences with the FX STX barrels? Anyone know if the RAW high power rifles can be had in .177? (currently their site doesn't list them in .177, just .22 and up) Any insights? I feel like .22 and bigger slugs get all the love, but surely I can't be alone in wanting to stay around 30FPE and maintaining air efficiency?
