High Power .177 - what are people's experiences?

Short version:
JSB and others now offer very high mass and high ballistic coefficient .177 cal pellets and slugs. What are people's experiences shooting them? What barrels shoot them well? Any experiences with the FX STX liners? I'm thinking particularly JSB Exact Beast Diabolo .177 Cal Pellets, 16.20 Grains. What kind of shot count are you getting as compared to .22?

The long version:
Slugs and high sectional density pellets are all the rage. And that is great for us in that it allows better accuracy at distance with a fraction of the wind drift. However the big disadvantage is that slug guns in .22 and up tend to be air hogs. For those of us who like to pack light, myself included, the obvious solution is to roughly maintain kinetic energy by dropping down a caliber to .177. If you can get ~100 shots per fill, there is no need to huff along a spare cylinder, you can just grab your rifle and go.
Enter the JSB Exact Beast Diabolo .177 Cal, which is 16.20 grains. (https://www.pyramydair.com/s/p/JSB_Exact_Beast_Diabolo_177_Cal_Pellets_16_20_Grains_Domed_250ct/1197) At 900fps that produces 30 foot pounds, and has better sectional density than a .22.
Likewise Nielsen has a handful of slugs which also promise great sectional density and ballistic performance in .177 without consuming as much air. Details are a little sparse though on what exactly makes these run well. (https://nielsenspecialtyammo.com/collections/177-caliber)

So who has shot these, and in what rifles? Any experiences with the FX STX barrels? Anyone know if the RAW high power rifles can be had in .177? (currently their site doesn't list them in .177, just .22 and up) Any insights? I feel like .22 and bigger slugs get all the love, but surely I can't be alone in wanting to stay around 30FPE and maintaining air efficiency?

I am shooting the JSB Beast 16.2 gr in my Daystate Red Wolf .177 HP with very good results and plenty of power 👍

I am getting around 110 shots on a 250 BAR fill 😃

Seems like they really like being pushed around 1000 FPS !

I also shoot slugs 👍

I've used the Nielsen slugs in the latest S510, Crown Continuum, Pulsar .177, Air Arms S200 and some of the pistol I have: a pumped 1720T and Velez for example. I've also tried the 16 and 13 grain options in pellets.

Really, the slugs or pellets aren't ideal, but if I could get a slug barrel from FX for the Crown, that would be very interesting!

Otherwise, IMHO, the twist rates and chokes have to be perfected for great results for the very heavy pellets or slugs.

We are still learning much about what is possible. It does seem that every rifle is individualistic, with one liking the heavy projectiles and others, not so much.

The guns I own don't like them much....but your mileage may vary..I hope you find something that pleases you and that you share with us?

I hear what you are saying about shot count but for a given fpe you are probably going to be very similar in air usage whether you are shooting .177 or .22.

I like the .177 a lot but for anything but paper and plinking I prefer .22 - especially if the pellets are traveling fast as you get pass-thru and little energy transferred to pests or small game.

I know you are asking about .177 but you are concerned about shot count. Just for reference, I just got a .22/700mm Impact with the PP and factory tuned I am running about 33 fpe with weli over 100 shots per fill (on a partial fill ~220 bar i shot 5 magazines (140 pellets) and still had air for easily another magazine or two).

Just my 2 cents

I have two .177s shooting relatively high energy. Both are EDguns as that is my preference.

My Matador Std is tuned for the 15.5 Nielsen slug. Shoots really freakishly well. Tuned for right at 930 fps.

I really like short bullpup packages. Recently got a Lelya in .177. It is currently tuned to shoot the Nielsen 15.5 slugs at 895-900. It too is crazy accurate. Shot count is 60+/-. I love the Lelya... it just fits my style. The Beasts are good, but inferior to the Nielsen slugs IMO for my wants. The BC of the slugs supports their potential in a big way. The fact that they are getting them on the auto press and will soon reduce the cost is a great advancement for the .177 from my seat.

Love this gun:

Heck I like it & I kind of dislike bull pups.

I’ve seen hard .177’s penetrating things a .22 slug wouldn’t at same power level. I’ve also seen fast .177’s go straight through birds and they fly away and die in flight or later. I say good for Groundhog skulls or ear shots.

With 7 barrels for my FX Elite I can test about anything. From ST, CZ, LW, Benchmark.

I need some more 29” Benchmarks in.177 & .25. Longest Smooth Twist .177 & .22 would be nice also.

3 .177’s on top. 3 .22’s, shortest 12 L&G LW on her, SS 29” Benchmark & 1 1/2 shroud .25 ST.
Any Royal barrel would fit.

Thank you so much everyone for your replies!

This is exceptional performance. These groups look about MOA, maybe better? It is hard to get a sense of scale.

Will the ST barrels shoot the 16 grain .177 pellets? Are they THAT stable? Ever consider making an adapter to allow that gem of an FX Elite to take STX barrels?

The impression I seem to be getting is that LW barrels are what run these well, and that people largely haven't tried STX .177 barrels? I suppose turning down a LW barrel to fit in a Crown shouldn't be that hard.....

Small shoot-N-See are 1 inch and 2 inch for the middle ones 👍

5 shot groups - So the one with 1020 FPS is sub ½ inch group at 50 yards 😃

Similar excellent performance from the heaviest .177 pellets from my Condor. Both the JSB's and H&N's shoot very well.

The Nielsen slugs are a step change in trajectory and terminal performance.

I like the Beasts but they do not compare.

IMO, no usable difference at shorter air gun ranges. If one is a "long distance" shooter then at some distance the slugs would certainly be likely to dramatically outperform the pellet. Depends on the distance, not an absolute statement.

I do agree on the cost consideration however. If the .177 slugs approached the pellet cost I would certainly work more with them but as of now they don't provide any advantage to me as they are no more accurate at the ranges I shoot (rarely beyond 70 to 80 yards with any air gun) and are 2.5 to 3 times the price.
