Here we go again

Some guys have squirrel, starling, chipmunk or even iguana problems. I have raccoon problems. Every year I post some pics of some of the ones I have to lay out. I thought I was good this year until last night. Had 4 different ones out there doing their thing. Took one at 30 and the other at 60 yards. I have no desire to exterminate all of them. I just don’t like having too many. When that happens, they get creative. That’s what started me blasting them in the first place.

Hello Vetmx,

I can appreciate your problem, I live on Sam Rayburn lake in the middle of a National Forrest. Very few people live here full time, more of a weekend retreat for most folks. The "city dudes" come in on the weekends, make a mess which they leave behind and the critters have learned how to make a meal out of the mess left behind. The "Coons" are quite creative and are a big problem so like you I try to keep their population down to a reasonable number 😉

That is some good shooting to "rest" two of those little critters.

Years ago I started taking them out with my .177 TX200. Then I moved to .22 PCP’s like my Taipan or Leshiy. Then I started on them with .25 slugs out of my TJ barreled P15 or pellets and slugs out of my RTI. The RTI has taken a ton of them with pellets and slugs. This year is my Impact .25 with slugs. What I’ve learned is the .177 will only get the job done with a shot to the side of the head. The other calibers opened up better shot angles on the head but all still require a head shot. Tried a few boiler room shots with slugs and those raccoons ran off. Bottom line is raccoons are very tough. If nature made them as big as dogs, it would take a deer rifle to put them down. Maybe.

I’ve been pretty lucky this year. Only see one or two a week so that’s fine. My buddies neighbor who doesn’t live real far from me is dealing with the nightly conveyor belt that just keeps bringing new raccoons. He’s live trapping them and is about at witts end with having to drive somewhere remote and release them. It actually messing with his work schedule.
