Help with Diana Outlaw 22 cal

I recently purchased a preowned 22 cal Diana Outlaw w/ a huma regulator from a well known airgun distributor. The gun is light and is very nice looking.

I watched numerous reviews on the Outlaw prior to purchasing and I saw in these reviews their Diana Outlaw stacked pellets at 20 yards and printed a small group at 50 yards. I had high hopes for my purchase. I noticed the inspection shot card that came with my gun showed a larger 5 shot group than what I saw in the reviews; potentially an indicator something is wrong?

Out of the box, I was getting poor accuracy at 25 yards and beyond. I shot through all the 22 cal pellets I currently have at 25 yards to see if I could find the right pellet. My groups were shot from a good table with two caldwell bags. I tried a variety of pellets, cleaned the barrel and tried unscrewing then rescrewing back on the factory moderator, but the results didn't change. I also single loaded and changed scopes to rule out the scope and the magazine. At the suggestion of the distributor, I took the moderator off and fired a few groups. The results without the moderator were still poor and obviously loud (as my wife told me).

I contacted the distributor, who was very nice and they agreed to refund my money (purchase price and original shipping). They would not give me a refund for return shipping, but agreed to give me a store credit for the amount if the rifle shot more than a 1 inch group at 25 yards when they got it. From my experience with low end (benji maximus) and high end pcps (taipan veteran), they all stacked pellets at 25 yards; so, even a 1 inch group seems unacceptable (once you find the correct pellet) for a properly functioning (non defective) pcp rifle.

For those that have experience with this gun, what kind of accuracy are you getting at 25 and 50 yards? Is the accuracy I'm getting consistent from your personal experience with this gun? Any suggestions to what is potentially the issue?

Thank you for your help!!!

-Matthew

The Diana Outlaw is an SPA gun. I've had a few (M10, P15 and PP700) and none had the accuracy some seem to get. In all cases the the barrels were the primary issue, which switching out with LW's cured in a spectacular fashion. There is very real, and risky barrel lottery with this brand. The P15 reg also needed replacement after a while but otherwise the guns were pretty solid in build and function.

Glad you got a refund - those groups are terrible.

That is definitely something that should be returned and I would even challenge the dealer regarding shipping costs because that is clearly defective.

Thank you all for the replies. It's nice to reaffirm I'm not being unreasonable regarding accuracy. I'll likely push for a refund instead of store credit. That being said they were "kind" enough to agree to waive the restocking fee. :)

I thought it was odd the dealer said they would pay for shipping for issues like the action not cycling, mechanical issue, etc, but specifically said accuracy was not deemed a defect or something they would pay return shipping on.

I also thought it odd the dealer reminded me it was a $500 Chinese rifle, as though justifying the accuracy. My sub $500 rifles, including the gauntlet, marauder, maximus and scorpion, stack pellets at 25 yards and shoot tight groups at 50 yards.

In a couple weeks when you see a 22 cal Outlaw with a Huma regulator, described as 95% condition, for $399 in the preowned section of a distributor....just say "no" and don't put it in your cart.

Unfortunately the guys pumping out airgun review videos don’t mention the barrel lottery. If I was a distributor sending out free guns for a known reviewer to help boost my sales, he would get hand selected guns. Wake up guys.

Totally agree and understand. I assumed a preowned gun, by a distributor who did the review on this specific brand and model, would be inspected/vetted for the barrel issues before it was listed in their preowned section. Seemed like a safer bet than a brand new one...but obviously that's not the case.

My outlaw (SPA M16) in .22 is pellet-on-pellet at 30m and 1/2 inch at 60m. I use Baracuda Match in 5.53mm at 250m/s (around 820 ft/s, or 31 fpe). Note: these same pellets also come in 5.50, 5.51 and 5.52 mm but accuracy with these and other pellets is not as good.

I like the weight and hold (fairly slim stock) of this gun and added a picatinny rail for an Atlas bipod. I aso adjusted the good 2-stage trigger to make it light. Great hunting rifle ... But that is not to say I haven't experienced my share of grief with this Chinese wonder ...

First, the poorly designed hammer retention pin on the cocking probe turned out to have a few too many stress points -- it broke. Did I pragmatically return the gun to Mundilar in Portugal for repair under warranty ? Well ... removing the remaining threaded bit, tapping the hardened bolt, and machining a stronger pin was MAYHEM -- but I got there in the end. Part of the fun was putting the cocking lever back and re-polishing it so that it would work half smoothly.

Shortly thereafter the previously tight groups suddenly started opening up. I ended up replacing the stock reg with a Lane unit set at 120 bar and also rebarreled the crown. Tight groups back ... But I am now eyeing the poorly machined baffles in the stock moderator with some apprehension. I glued a felt strip inside each baffle to reduce the muzzle report, but if they move pellets may start clipping ... Fingers crossed!

Anyone have experience with this gun in .25? Wonder if the short-ish 460 mm barrel allows enough power in that bigger caliber, and how about the muzzle report?
