Help! My latest batch of JSB 18.13 are shooting like a shot gun. *UPDATE*

My HW100 loves the JSB .22 18.13 5.52 head size pellets. Easy 1/2 inch groups at 50m. But I just received 3 new tins of pellets and I'm getting flyers everywhere. They are also shooting about 5 inches high!

My rifle is still grouping very well with H&N Baracuda so the problem must be with the pellets. I noted that on the label on the back of the tin of the last batch I had (shot great) there was 00 but on this new batch (shot terrible) the number was 04. I also noticed that the indention in the back of the pellets is deeper on the new batch.

Does anyone know what the 00 and 04 means and has anyone else ever had this problem?

Thanks for any advice,

Chris in Oz

Back home on the computer so I can elaborate on my earlier reply, the last few orders of JSB's I received from Potter's the tins don't have a seal around them, unsure if this is common, when you say the indent in the pellet is deeper makes me wonder if they are not actually 15.9grn pellets combine them with your HW100 which I am led to believe shoot fairly hot may be the reason your groups have gone to pieces. A quick check on the scales will soon tell which pellet you have.

Are you on the map, where abouts are you in Oz?

Hi Strikey,

I'm not on the map yet (I'll add it to my to do list!) I'm in the Adelaide Hills South Australia. Now you mention it the last three tins of the JSB 18.13 from Potters were NOT sealed with tape. They are the ones I'm having issues with. I haven't got accurate enough scales to measure their weights but I did measure the head size and I got 5.50 not the 5.52 on the tin. See image below.

I have also taken a picture of 18.13 (sealed tin), 18.13 (latest unsealed tin - AKA Mystery pellet) and a 15.89 for comparison. See image below,

They are definitely not the 15.89 pellets but they sure don't seem to be the 18.13 pellets either!

I'll send a copy of these images to Potters and get them to check with their supplier what's the story. Something a bit odd is going on. .

Have you managed to resolve the issue with the JSB's and your rifle yet? I have been playing with a different tune for my Huntsman lately while trying pellets from my recent order and some that I bought nearly 3yrs ago, honestly have not seen any difference in group sizes at 25 or 50 yds. Also tried measuring them with vernier calipers as you have ( possibly not the best way to measure headsize on a pellet ) and on average found the older pellets to be slightly smaller than the recently purchased ones. Would be interested to know what your problems are and if its sorted.

Hi Guys,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner but I have been CRAZY busy!

I had a chat to Potters about the pellets. They said that nothing has changed with their supplier and that the JSB tins now all come without a tape seal. They suggested (quite rightly) that the problems I'm having with getting good groups may be rifle related. They also offered me a refund or replacement on my last order of pellets which was very kind of them. (I declined their kind offer as the pellets were all good quality so not their or JSB's fault).

I'll definitely be continuing to use Potters as they seem like really good guys.

I think that Ghostmaker you have made a good point. I reckon that the HW100 likes a larger head size and that latest batch of JSB's I got where just a fraction smaller hence the poor groups and flyers. I asked if Potters were getting any 5.53 pellets in but they said their next order was all 5.52.

I'll get a pellet gauge and do a few test groups with different head sizes within a tin and see what happens - when I'm not so CRAZY busy!!!

Hi Chris,

I'm in Sydney and have also recently bought JSB 18.14 pellets from Potters. These were my first tin of JSBs and I was expecting great things from what I had read. I am shooting a FX Royal 300 at 880fps for the JSBs 18.1gr and 783fps for the H&N Baracude accurate heavy 21.1gr.

I can shoot 18mm groups at 50 Meters outdoors with H&N Baracuda 21.1 pellets, but the best I can get from these JSB pellets is about 35mm. Same shooting session.
The label on the back of the pellets says "4 5.52". when I measure them with my calipers they are 5.50 and smaller. I have a pelletgagge arriving an a few days so will know for sure.

I'm going to spend the week measutebating when my pelletgage turns up and see if I can get some data next time I go out.

Thanks,
Trent.

Hi Trent

I will be really interested to hear your results. I reckon you got pellets from the same batch I got. They definitely seem to be on the small size so I hope you can confirm that with a pellet gauge. At least you get good groups with the barra's!

I must admit to being a bit disheartened by the whole air gun thing at the moment. Part of my job is to control rabbits at the golf club where I work, but due to the poor groups and flyers I no longer feel comfortable shooting them past about 30m. I took a shot at one recently (52m good rangeing good shot release no wind).. The pellet went left and low and hit the rabbit in the spine. It paralysed its back legs and while trying to crawl away it was screaming. Fortunately my follow up shot (at a moving target 60m) flew true and killed it. Both were head shots obviously.

So at the moment I am sticking to a rimfire which is not ideal on a golf course even at dusk. ( You would be amazed how many golfers go out for a hit at that time!)

All the best

ps Where are you getting your pellet gauge from?

Hi Chris,

With any luck it will arrive today. Funny how it takes 4 days to get from the US to Sydney, then 5 days to get the last 25km from the Airport to my place Hmmmmm.....

I bought the PelletGage directly from the guy who makes them - http://pelletgage.com/ - It was USD$82 via Priority Mail.

I understand your frustration. I wont try to hunt until I can get consistent groups. Even 20mm at 50M would be fine, but I'm getting 1 good group of 5 shots, then the next 5 are 30-40mm and all over the shop. I hope measuring and grading the pellets helps.

I'll be in touch soon I hope.

Trent.
