The newest scheme for eliminating hammer bounce is what is being called the SSG or "Stopping Spring Guide." The efficiency numbers folks are getting with various renditions of the concept are truly impressive. Consider nearly doubling the shot count on a fill as an example of the efficiency increase.

The concept is creating a method that captures the spring at a set length which is a little bit shorter than the space between the hammer and the end cap when the hammer is just touching the valve. This means the hammer has a short bit of free travel before it hits the valve---something on the order of .040". When the hammer tries to rebound it hits a preloaded spring which stops it pretty much dead. At least any bit of rebound is not enough to open the valve again.

The older schemes with that stop the hammer mechanically work pretty well too. But with some manufacturing differences some folks report more friction on cocking, gritty feel on cocking, or not wanting to cock all the way easily.

In any event, keeping the hammer from re-striking the valve open, saves a lot of air.
