I last few weeks I have bought (2) of these. http://www.hawkeoptics.com/sidewinder-ed-10-50x60-tmx.html

I already own a 8-32x56 Sidewinder.

So these are my second and third Hawkes.

The first 10-50x60

If you're not familiar with Hawke Sidewinders they come with a sunshade, metal scope caps, parallax adjustment wheel, tools and manuals.

I did not use the parallax adjustment wheel as I found the focus knob was not too tight to use my hand. However it should be noted that on the 10-50x60 it does NOT use the rubber gasket that has notches that slips over the focus wheel. It is a positive mounting system now, with pins in the wheel and holes in the knob. Aka no more slipping and sliding.

Negatives on this scope...
  • I knew before ordering that some have had problems with focusing clearly, either at short distance or at high magnification. This scope will not focus at any distance. It's not bad, and I will send it in for repairs/service in a few weeks.
  • This is a IR scope. Unlike the smaller Sidewinders it uses a rheostat instead of a stepped setting. While a nice idea the execution is lacking here... smooth intensity increase, slowly, slowly, wham bright as can be. Basically the last little bit is a blast, so short you can't really find a middle ground.
Positives on this scope...
  • Nice and bright even on 50x.
  • Nice feel on all adjustments.
The second 10-50x60...

I order the 1/8 MOA turrets with this one. They are indeed slick engineering! Easy to change out, go slow and make sure they are where they are supposed to be before cranking the locking nuts on them.

This one does not suffer from focus issues and is as sharp as can be, clear and bright!

The only negative is the front scope cap will not screw into the sun shade. It came mounted on the scope. The shade mounts on the scope great, but there is no getting the cap to screw on. I will like just order another sun shade, as I suspect that by the time I've talked to them on the phone, shipped the old in and back, I would be out less time and money than is I just order a new one.

Overall impressions

Would I buy another, yes if I had the need.
Am I a "happy camper", pretty much, we'll see how I feel after the focus is fixed.
Hawkes are good bang for the buck. Clear glass, nice reticles.

"Dirte"Sidewinder ED vs. Sightron Slll? What's your thoughts?
Brightness -- Sidewinder but its not a huge difference
Clarity -- Sidewinder by a smig
Turrets -- Sidewinder
IR -- Sightron by miles and miles
Caps -- Sidewinder by miles and miles

Reticle is a bit subjective, so I'll say that the Sidewinder reticle seems to be finer, but that may simply be by design too. Sightron has tons of reticle designs, Sidewinder one.

Being able to change out the turrets for 1/4 MOA, 1/8 MOA is wonderful!

Both are about the same price on the street, at least within a couple hundred of each other. If someone handed me one of each for the same price it would come down to the reticle design and intended use as to which I would choose.

Thanks for the review and comparison.

"T3PRanch"Glad the second one was clear. I still feel bad about the first one's lack of clarity. Things like that probably worry me more than they should. Keep us updated as to the repair.

Your event is next weekend?

Thanks
Thurmond
No worries, my expectations were set correctly before I ordered.

Yeppers, the Phoenix Invitational is the 9th - 12th (http://www.phoenixairgun.net/the-phoenix-invitational) Hopefully the weather cooperates for it. We have had some of the best shooting weather the last few weeks, punctuated by massive rains and gusty winds. If we can string a couple calm days together with the crowd that will be shooting this event we might see some US records set at 25m and 50y and some club records set at 75y and 100m.

I was able to get out yesterday and put (250) bulls worth with the new scope. I increased my average score by 3 points! Very pleased!

What makes Sidewinder turrets winner over SIII? Really would like to know.

Sightron are renowned for reproducible tracking/repeatability. My experience using SIII for field target confirms this over ranges requiring slightly over a full revolution (1/8 MOA per click) and many are using SIII in FT competition where reliable ranging and clicking is pretty important. The Hawke is a few hundred $ less expensive, so if its as good as SIII I'm interested since I'll be upgrading another rifle in the future.

For reticles: Sightron have a huge range (including custom shop options) so it must be hard to compare with Hawke?

"johnbuechler"How did your scope turn out after sending it in for focus problems? Does it now focus correctly at any magnification and any distance?
Preface… I HATE dealing with support of any kind!!!

This was frankly one of the most simple and ”pain free” experiences I’ve had. One email and a reply the next day with a RMA number and instructions. I shipped it back and about the time I thought I should be contacting them to make sure they got it and all that, ding-dong the replacement was being delivered, lol.

They shipped me a new scope that is in perfect working condition.

The interchangeability of the turrets makes the Hawke the winner. I don't shoot FT so I have never really paid close attention to the actual POI movement. I'm strictly shooting BR with these, so its get the vertical zero'ed for the distance and conditions and shoot bulls. I like the 1/8 MOA over the 1/4 MOA as it's easier to get exactly vertical with no hold over/under.

I like the Hawke reticle for BR, you have to do a lot of windage adjustment through out a competition and having the graduations the way they do makes it pretty easy to shoot a sighter, make note of the drift and move to a bull with the correct adjustment on the reticle. Like you say though, with all the options Sightron offers it's really a mute point, with Hawke it's a take it or leave it option.
