Having a blast chucking

I don’t know where they are coming from. But I do know where they are going! Been helping a friend set up his 30’ swimming pool Friday and Saturday. Got home Saturday afternoon and seen 3 heads poking up in the grass along side of my barn. Haven’t had a chuck in the barn for a couple years. I did shoot a 1/2 dozen coon out of it over the last month or so. But no chucks. The barn is about 65 yards from our deck. So I set up a rest and started picking them off. My .25 Mrod is dead on at 50. So I give it an extra 1 1/2”. Got 4 Saturday night and 4 more today. What a blast hearing the pellet hit with not much other noise from the rifle. So far It’s 2 females and 6 about 1/3 grown pups. Tonight I seen another big one and 1 little one. I know where I will be at daylight. Right back on the deck! The cool part is I have been shooting red squirrels with the PP700 while waiting for the chucks. So far I got 7 of the little buggers. Seen 4 more tonight just before dark. They have come up to the yard to eat the Maple tree helecopter seeds. Can’t Waite till morning!

Guess I could have taken pictures with my phone. But it’s not real exciting to see a dead chuck or Squirrel laying on the ground with a tiny pellet hole in its head. But if I got one with the big bore or it was a long shot, something out of the ordinary, then I do take a picture. I think I have more pictures of dead animals on my phone than all other pictures combined. But no videos.

Got another one beside the barn this morning and 2 more reds. Packing up the truck to take my boy to VA. To start his new job. He says, where's the rifle? I see a chuck under the pop-up camper. I grabbed the Flashpup and gave it to him. A few min later I see the little bugger poke his head out. Pop, and he laid there flopping and spaying blood all over the side of the camper. This one was a lot smaller the the others. Looks like there might be another litter. Might be coming out from under the neighbors garage. Never seen them this thick. Heading to the farm in the morning to replant a couple acres of pumpkins that didn’t come up. Might take the rifle with me.

Add another one to the pile. Got this one inside the barn with the Flashpup. After getting the pumpkins and squash planted at the farm this morning, I figured it was too hot to hunt. So I came home and was putting the truck away when this little one runs in to the barn. Wasn’t much of a shot at 30’. But it’s one more gone. After 2 days of driving to VA and back, I will be ready to do some hunting at the farm. After we plant a couple more fields of pumpkins. Dang, I hate those things. But it does bring the deer in this fall. Not to mention the sales for holloween.

Got home from a 1700 mile round trip to VA to help my son move. Decided to take the .40 Badger for a walk. Seen this guy in the lane along the creek. He was a little over a 100 yards so I tried to sneak a little closer. But he seen me and started running for his hole. Lucky for me, not so much for him, he came straight down the lane towards me. He stopped and stood up at 85 yards. Figured I had better start posting pictures.

Worked on the .45 Bully replacing the scope and sighting in this afternoon. Thought I would go for a walk tonight and see if I could locate a chuck. No luck. At least till I headed for the house and seen this guy run under the barn. So I went in the house and got the .22 Flashpup. Started for the barn and he poked his head out. 32 yards freehand. Now if I could just get a poke at that dang chipper that keeps running in and out of the garage.

Mowed the lane along the creek today. Thought I seen something run into a brush pile. Might have been a rabbit. Thought I would take the .45 Bully back and watch. Sure enough, a woodchuck at about 75 yards. I ways lying prone and waited till he stood up before I took the shot. I missed him! I am only sighted in to 50 yards and didn’t know how much holdover to use. So I gave it about 4”. Too much I guess. Anyways, he ran right me and stood up again. This time I aimed at the top of his head when he stood up. Ended up at 68 yards. As I was walking up to the house, I seen another one run under the barn. Ran into the house and traded the Bully for the .25 Marauder. Watched for an hour and didn’t see him again. I will be watching for him.

Got two more chucks this morning. One with the Bully at a little over 50 yards. Again on my up to the house I had one run under the barn. I went in and got the Mrod. Walked around the corner of the shed on the way to the barn and the little bugger was sitting on my garden tractor seat looking at me. Wasn’t much of a shot at 12 yards. Wish I would have waited for him to move. Mad a hell of a mess on the seat. Was back planting food plots tonight and seen another one in the lane by the creek. Will head back there in the morning. We have lived here for over 20 years and have never shot more than a couple each year. It has been fun for sure.
