Having a Ball at the Shooting Range

Yesterday I was shooting my Daisy Avanti 753 .177. I couldn't hit a thing. I was aiming at the bulls eye, but they pellets were going everywhere. There was no consistency at all. They went to every direction on the clock.

So I thought that maybe the rifle was dirty, and that it needed a cleaning, and lubrication of all the required areas. The bore was actually very dirty. After reading the instructions again carefully, I discovered they recommend the bore to be cleaned after about every 50 shots. I guess I had upwards of 200 on the rifle. Stupid me.

I also found there was a tiny sponge that needs oiling about every 1000 shots, but I had no where that many. But I live in a very dry climate, and that climate leaches moisture of all types from you and other exposed things. This sponge was bone dry.

Now the rifle is back to hitting as close to dead center as my skills allow, usually about 1/4 to 1/2 inch from that bulls eye at 15 yards.

Lesson learned. Each rifle has its own requirements when it comes to maintenance. Not just a general rule of thumb when it comes to that. This Daisy is precision, though no where top of the line, but definitely better built than other pellet rifles I have shot, and it seems just a little dirt can cause some big deviations downrange on the target.
