Have been trying to choose between two FX rifles, now a practical third choice

I have been trying to decide between a rifle like that wonderful Wildcat III of Joe Cool’s and a Dreamline Classic. And looking at the Dreamlines, I even looked at the bottle guns because I have a spare CF 4500 psi tank left over after converting my new Texan LSS 257 to CF, thinking I could buy the rifle with a aluminum tank and switch it to the CF tank.

Then I remembered the FX Crown VP. I wondered if the only difference was the aluminum tank, and P.A says that is the only difference, is this true? Is the VP the latest generation?

I had a Royale 400 and 500 a few years ago and I loved them.

Is the tank the only difference between a Crown VP and a Crown synthetic?

Regards,

Roachcreek

Yep. Only difference. The synthetic stocks have a VERY nice finish on them as well. Really top notch. As long as the bottle is threaded m18x1.5 (it should be), you would be good to go. Just remove the bottle valve from the aluminum tank, and pop it into your spare CF bottle.

If you get a Crown new, just make sure it has a picatinny rail on top. Otherwise, you may as well get a used one.

What will the airgun be used for?

Informal target shooting at my sons place, perhaps slugs to 200 yards. Mostly on steel.

200 yard slug shooting is .30 & .35 PP FX Impact MKII territory(slug or superior barrel). Next best if your intent on the FX brand at that distance would be a .30 cal Crown Continuum 700mm (slug or superior barrel). Those 3 airguns would probably make 200 yard shots more doable, and you’ll probably need a darn good scope. My $0.02?

200 yard shots are not easy, a lot of knowledge and skill come into play that is not always shown on videos.

I agree with Joe here 100% I am not saying it isn't possible but wow what a task to get a dreamline to do that haha. I cannot do it although there may be a few that can here it is definitely not something I can achieve haha . I hope you get the correct one that brings you nothing but enjoyment. 👍😁

That last tid bit of information was and is the key to you decision making in picking the correct fx model for sure. Good call JoeKool. +1 for you Sir.

Came in yesterday. Recommend it.

Boys, I realize that a fellow coming on the forum announcing he wants a airgun gun to shoot 200 yards is the ultimate Nubie. But sometimes you run into old folks that have been doing this for years. I have 8 to 9 thousand posts on the TAG and old Yellow under the monikers of ROACHCREEK and UNREPENTENTSINNER. I inform you of this not to brag, but to get out of the “what do you want to do with this and it takes a lot to shoot 200 yards” syndrome.

You need to know that in 2013 I made 3 videos of busting 12 oz cola cans at 500-550 and 615 yards. Google Roachcreek utube 615 yard 12 oz cola can Haley 257 airgun. B t w, I did this with the last Haley 257 that Jack and Reba made, using a 4x14 VX3 Leupold with a Custom Holland MOA reticle. I used to post almost weekly, on the old Yellow sub moa groups at 300 yards. I put up with a ton of crap from BB gunners saying I was ruining the sport by making airguns more deadly by using cast bullets, one night it got to me, I gave up the ministry of cast bullet airguns, I sold all my airguns and the wife and I bummed around for 5 months in Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines.

These days most of my shooting is done at 10 yards due to a on duty assault that eventually took most of my vision. I taught myself how to shoot “wrong handed” after they removed my shooting eye. But I can still cast and shoot and will until the darkness overtakes me.

Now that we have all this on the table, I have a 257 Texan LSS with a Hawke 4-16 ffp scope and a couple molds for it. Now I want a Hot shooting current production FX, of a model to be determined by your valuable experience and advice, with the power to shoot my cast bullets. I have been casting for 45 years and for airguns for 8 years, I want to shoot either 25 or 30 Caliber at 200 yards when I get bored with the Texan 257. I have played with TJ’s and LW barrels and now want to see what that wonderful superior barrel and added plenum will do for me.

And of course being ignorant of the newer FX’s I need your advice on which platform to buy. And I really value your advice.

Respectfully,

The problem I am having with this decision , is I am ware of spending 1800 bucks for a synthetic Crown continuesm is that I still would not have the Superior barrel, and would have two barrels that are devalued due to FX making the Superior barrel available.

Joe, your dual plenumed Wildcat III seems to be the only platform to offer the Superior barrel mounted and have the ease of adding plenums.
I have a couple bullpups and long range tethered shooting is not quite the strong point of bullpups, although your groups are very good.

Right now, due to fond memories of Royals, the Crown synthetic with a superior barrel would be my first choice, but logically, the Wildcat 3 is probably the only one offering the flexibility and thus my best choice. With you guys saying the Dreamline is not what I need, the Dreamline is off the table.

Not sure why the dreamline wouldn't be just as valid as the wildcat. Both can use an added plenum easily.

Have you considered getting an FX Boss? People say they regularly out-shoot the 30 caliber Crowns. Not to say the opposite would or could not be possible...

My Crown is setup to shoot 22 at 65fpe now, which is frankly overkill for that caliber. But I will be setting mine up to shoot 30 at hopefully somewhere around 92fpe. This virus mess has cut into my earnings, however, so some things including that are on the back burner.

That would be with a 600mm barrel, 6.5mm valve seat, 7mm valve seal, custom hammer weight, custom plenum. If you don't mind modifying, I think the crown has plenty of power, but I think the ease of installation, and availability of existing plenums for the other 2 fx guns might make them more desirable.

Been following this discussion and am curious why we are not talking about the possible difference in the barrel housing for the barrel liner in the Crown. I remembered viewing a video about the new "Super Light" barrel system on the Crown Continuum. This new barrel system uses the standard barrel liner but a different barrel housing. Not sure if this barrel system is being used on the Crown VP but I recommend you research this. This is an Airgun Depot video talking about the barrel system:
