Happiness Is A New Permission

Went to a new permission today, a small dairy farm to take care of some of the pest birds. I was shooting my FX Verminator in .22 cal with RWS wadcutters on pw 2 for 12 fpe. Today I was mostly shooting pigeons and sparrows. The farmers real problem is starling roosting in the cow sheds at night. I plan to go back very soon for some nv action. Bill

For all those complaining about the quality of the video that was not as important to me as much as putting a hurting on the pest birds the first day. If any of you that do a lot of bird shooting know they wise up quick. As I walked down the middle of the cow barn the pigeons were moving out quick. If I went for perfect video footage I would not have killed as many birds as I did which is what I am there to do. Bill

Keep posting. I enjoy seeing a good shot.

I also have a couple of permissions at Dairy farms. Unlike your experience I had to resort to a shotgun and get the pigeons as they flew out of a shed where they roost. Really spooky for some reason. The pigeon poo was shin deep right under their roosting spot.

However my permission is just like yours with the Starlings. Right now there are three sheds with Starlings roosting everywhere. There are like white chalk lines of feces below all the rafters. I too will use night vision but I have seen some of the videos where the shooter was using just a red LED. It didn't seem to spook the birds but green did. I thought I saw that white was even better than green. I can easily mount the LED light on the barrel and use the regular scope which would make it much easier and lighter. However, don't know if the red LED will spook them. It's too darn cold out there now so it might be awhile before I go test the red LED. Any info about the red LED come your way?

The 12 FPE and not putting holes in the roof will allow you to keep the permission longer. I have heard good things about the new JSb Hades. Might be better than the wadcutter. Maybe you should give them a try.

I went back the next evening with my ATN x sight for the starlings. I had noticed a few lights fixtures in the cow shed and asked how bright it was in there at night. He responded not very. That had me worried as too much light I knew the nv sight would not work well. They milk the cows from 5:00 to 10:00 pm. And I got there at about 7:00 pm. It indeed was to light for the ATN x sight to see well in either day or night mode. After trying it both ways without much success I put on flashlight and chased the starlings from one end of the shed to the other. I told the farmer and he said he could set the timer to turn the lights out after milking was done at ten. That way for me the starlings will not have enough light to fly away and hopefully sit there in a row to pick off like in a shooting gallery. Bill

Jim a few days ago I did shoot a block of 20% ballistic gel with both the Hades and RWS wadcutters. This was with 12 fpe at the muzzle at an 4 oz. block about the same weight as a starling placed at 27 yards. The wadcutter stayed in the block and the Hades went through. Starting with that flat head on the wadcutter just puts the brakes on the penetration. Bill
