Gremlins in my safe

Been fishing for the last two weeks, great fun catching Bass and Saratoga. After unpacking the next day I took my Hw30 out for a plink. Everything going well for the first 10 or so shots then the dreaded poi shift began. Checked all the usual stuff which narrowed it down to the scope. Not again, this is a new replacement 3*9*40 Airmax. Removed the Airmax and fitted one of my cheapie rim fire scopes. Back on target and grouping as it used to. So I removed my 4*12*40 Airmax from my Hw77 and fitted the 3*9*40 to it. When I went to mechanically centre the scope the windage dial was about 5 clicks off total left.

I can remember making daily changes to the windage dial but this seemed a bit extreme. I checked the scope rings and all good. It’s got me stumped, I can only assume that there was something not right with the scope placement or the rings. The 3*9*40 only required a couple of clicks in elevation and windage after mechanically centering and is now performing as it should for the last couple of days on my Hw77. Looks like I got a spare 4*12*40 now.

Yesterday I took my Lgv out for a plink. At 30 metres the first 7 shots at half a mil dot hold over were on the money. Then the next 4 or 5 shots I could hear a ping in the compression chamber. I though that’s a bit odd but kept on plinking then the ping disappeared and was replaced by a honk.

In the manual of my Benjamin Titan it advises a drop or two of silicon oil in the compression chamber every 250 pellets but I usually do it after each tin. So I dropped two drops of silicon oil in the Lgv’s chamber and put it away. This was yesterday, this morning the honk has gone but at 30 meters I no longer require a half mil dot hold over. It seems the two drops of oil has gained the Lgv a little bit of elevation. We’ll see how long this lasts.

It appears that the gremlins are gone for the moment so it’s back to plinking.

This morning I took the 3*9*40 off the Hw77, mechanically centered it and put it back on my Hw30 (better glass). Sighting it in at ten metres the first shot was approximately one foot above and way to the left. So I took the scope off again and turned the front scope ring around and shimmed the front ring up by strip of coke can.

Put everything back together and tried again. The scope was still mechanically centered and this time the shot was still very high but only one inch to the left of the bull. Another two strips of coke can and only two inches above bull. The little Hw30 is now zeroed in at 25 metres with a wad of coke can under the front ring.

I then put the 4*12*40 back on the Hw77, took it around to my 30 metre range, fired off 5 shots and put it back into the safe, didn’t have to touch the dials. At least something worked out well. I’ll shoot the 30 tomorrow again, hopefully no gremlins will have got to it.
