Great Silent Pellet Trap & Fun Targets Idea

Hello all,

I wanted to share with you guys a great set up for an EXTRA QUIET back yard plinking I finally (lol) came up with, and/or you're bored with the standard paper/steel squirrel targets: 

So after trying countless "quiet" pellet traps, this is by far THE quietest one I've found. I picked up 4 Fleece Throws at Wallmart ($1 each) along with a 2x4 piece of high density Airtex green foam at Joann's ($12). Next i grabbed a carton box, put 2 of the fleece throws in it, followed by the foam which I folded in half (for added density) tied it all together

super tight using a rope. I added 2 more fleece throws on top of the box (see pic). Pellet's impact is super silent when hit the foam followed by a fleece throw back up!. Absolute noiseless. For fun targets I used large pins with jelly beans on them. These were small enough to challenge and they explode nicely when hit :) Setup shown is at 40 yards, mild wind. Great for quiet fun practice. 👍

Hi , I've also conducted a lot of tests to decrease the sound of pellets hitting the target . I built a wooden box with rubber foam on the inside walls , and filled with seat foam / rubber foam / bloc of clay / some newspapers / foam . See pictures below. When there is no target , the pellet hits directly the foam and others stuffs , and this is noiseless . But when I put a target ( in printing paper ) I can hear a " smack" coming out of the box ; this is the sound of the pellet hitting the paper , same as when you flick a sheet of paper with your finger. I've tried to fix this problem with others kind of paper , cardboard , paper towels ...nothing seems to work to make this quiet enough for me . However , I'm sure my neighbours do'nt realize I'm shooting an airgun , ( all my guns have a moderator and are really quiet ; moreover I'm shooting from inside of my shop) . But this "smack" upsets me a bit , so if somebody had an idea for a "quiet target paper " , he'll be welcome .

Hey Mike,

Well, you definitely took this to the next level! that is a very impressive pellet trap. (the lengths we'll go to keep it quiet, right?)

Try attaching the paper AS CLOSE AS POSSIBLE to the foam (I use 5-8 pins which helps making it super tight). That might reduce the impact noise.

I'm also using the Zero DB moderator which works great in keeping the noise down. BTW, today I found out that if the foam/blankets are wet (did some shooting in the snow today), the impact noise is even quieter.

Thanks Ari ; it was the result of a lot of testing and , apart from this "smack" on the target paper , it's a quiet system . Moreover this sound comes straight in my direction , as I'm facing the box when shooting. I believe that people walking 150-200 yards from the box couldn't hear something.

Now your idea to put the target paper closer to the foam is great ; I made some tests and this works pretty well , making a lower tone noise. 

This is why I find AGN forum so fun : sharing great ideas between airgun lovers😄

I haven't tried this myself, but on the paper smack sound -- have you tried using packing tape to "laminate" the page? If it's held more rigidly, maybe it won't make as much noise?

Failing that, you could just use a spray bottle and lightly spray it with water, LOL. Wet paper doesn't make much noise, but clean up would be a bit more interesting.
