Got my Impact MKII back today!!! WooHoo. The problem is...

I got my Impact MKII back from FXUSA this morning. Here's a little of the back story...I had a major leak and a minor leak about three weeks ago. I took the gun apart three times which was great for learning it inside and out, but I couldn't find anything that looked wrong. I changed the O-rings that had any kind of mark on them at all but the leaks persisted. I finally ended up sending it back which I didn't want to do, mainly because FX is in N.C. and I'm in Cali. I thought it would take forever, it didn't!

Fed Ex got it from Cali to FX in N.C. in a week, Bryan took it apart, rebuilt and tested on Thurs.-Fri. and let it set over the weekend. He tested again, tuned it in on Monday and FX had it shipped by Wed.. Fed Ex took a week to get it back to me, I got it this morning and had a chance to remount/level the scope and shoot it earlier this morning. It shoots great!

I want to give a shout out to BRYAN@FXUSA, he helped me try to diagnose the problem 3 days in a row when the major leak started, but to no avail. When he got the gun, he called me to have me remind him of the problem, when he got done fixing the leak he called me again to tell me it had been fixed and ask if there was anything else I wanted done to the gun before they ship it back to me. Bryan is just a great guy, super friendly, helpful, a talented technician and so far, my gun is shooting great! I know Ernest gets all the recognition and rightly so, however, I wanted to thank Bryan for the great service throughout this ordeal. He definitely made it a lot easier on me and took care of his business fast.

Thanks to SUMMER@FXUSA too. I spoke to her quite a few times and she definitely made the shipping process as easy as can be! She is very friendly, always willing to help and is a pleasure to deal with often times when people are upset about a non functioning air gun and I'm sure they're probably not the most pleasant to deal with. Thank you Summer!

So, now that I've said my thank you to them both, on to the good stuff... The 3-5BAR a day leak was the small O-ring between the regulator and the action. Probably one of the only O-rings I didn't change because it looked perfect and I didn't have that size O-ring. Completely my fault but I would have sworn that wasn't where the leak was coming from. I did check the regulator like you told me to though Edosan. LOL The major leak that would drain my tank in a few minutes was somewhere in the rear block and was associated with the valve/valve housing, just like HeavyImpact and I thought it would be. I had taken it apart all three times and saw nothing wrong, changed the O-rings, cleaned and lubed it all and it still leaked. Bryan said that when he changed everything inside and out of the valve housing, the leak stopped. He didn't however, find the smoking gun and identify the exact problem. That's a bummer because I really wanted to know what was causing the leak and why I didn't see anything that would cause the problem. I am thrilled that it's fixed and that I learned the inner workings of my gun by taking it apart 3+ times. If you haven't taken apart your Impact yet, do it. It's not hard at all. There are many parts and it can seem a bit intimidating but if you go slowly, take pictures if you need to, and use common sense, it's not difficult. Do it, you will benefit from learning the gun inside and out. You should also order a complete O-ring kit and silicone so you have it when you need it,. I had one on hand but I'm going to buy another so I have a complete and partial kit and won't run out of the proper O-ring size like I did with the regulator O-ring that I had already used for something else. The other thing I would definitely suggest is that you change out the C-3 O-ring when you take apart the gun and have a couple spares on hand for the future. The delrin washer that replaces the C-3 O-ring is more durable and will give you a bit more power. So that's it, no major defect or anything that stood out to cause the leak. I know that not knowing the definitive cause will bother some of you like it did me, but really I'm just glad my gun is fixed and working great.

Now that you've read all of that, here is THE PROBLEM I mentioned in the title of my post...

After my gun sprung it's second leak, I was so frustrated that I started looking for another gun. I know mtnGhost had been trying to sell a RAW but there were some messaging problems or something, that myself and some of the others encountered when originally trying to speak with him. So, the gun didn't sell. I contacted him, he still had the gun and he sold it to me for a phenomenal price. Thanks bud, I'm thrilled about the price and couldn't have asked for a nicer, more trustworthy guy to deal with! If you want to sell me that NX8 for about $1400, I'll take it too! LOL I got the RAW about a week after I sent back my Impact and had a chance to shoot it the next day. It was slower than I like with a huge ES so after doing a bit of research I turned up the regulator 3/8-1/2 a turn and then adjusted the hammer spring while shooting over the radar to get it dialed in. I had it shooting the 33.95 MKII's at about 935FPS but found it is most accurate at about 910-915FPS and shoots the slugs, almost all of them, very well at the same settings. That's a definite plus that I've never seen before. During the time I was waiting for my Impact to come home, my oldest son Alex(11) and I were shooting off the bench and I made the mistake of asking him if he wanted my Impact when I got it back. He had never really shown any interest in it at all other than shooting it, so I was sure he would say no. He had certainly been thinking about it because as soon as the words came out of my mouth, he barked YES, instantly...YES! I love the RAW, it is the most accurate gun I've ever shot with such a variety of pellets and slugs. I like the way it shoulders, shoots accurately and is so simple. On the other hand, it is loud, long and heavy. We shoot of the bench about 80% of the time so that's not a big deal though. The Impact is my baby, the most technologically advanced gun I've ever owned. It's accurate, extremely tunable, caliber swapable, very powerful, looks awesome, it's compact and nearly silent with the shroud and 0Db moderator attached. It's also fun to be able to accessorize it to your exact specifications like an AR. On top of all that, I love the FX brand, the people like Brian and Summer that I mentioned, the best air gun technician out there-Ernest Rowe and something a lot of people don't think about, ease of maintenance and repair materials. If I want to do some maintenance on, or repair my Impact, I can go on-line and find schematics, videos, articles, pictures, and thousands of people that are willing to help me. Not so much with some of the other top tier, expensive gun makers. So my dilemma/problem is this... Do I let my son have my Impact MKII or go back on my word and make him keep shooting his Streamline? If I give him my Impact, it won't be long before my younger son, Cooper(9) wants a new gun so that he's on par with dad(RAW) and Alex(MKII). He's been eye balling the Uragan Compact!

Hmmm, I guess it's really not much of a problem after all! The boys and I will have quite a few terrific guns in the stable for any of us to use...We'll have an FX Impact MKII .25, a Streamline .25, a Brocock Bantam .22, a RAW HM1000x .25 and a Uragan Compact .22! Woohoo!

Sorry for the long post. I ramble or elaborate at times, more than I need to anyway. I'm pretty excited to have the Impact MKII back at home though. Everybody have a great upcoming weekend!

Just my 2c here, take it as worth what you paid for it, which is to say nothing. Also apologies in advance for being a bit forward/rude, you asked for opinions and so I thought I'd give you my unvarnished opinion on some EXTREMELY personal subjects. And that often doesn't leave people thrilled, so in advance no offense or insult is intended, feel free to just ignore me as another nutjob on the internet. :)

1) You can't go back on your word to your son, even considering doing so should be embarrassing. You're teaching him how to be a man, monkey see monkey do, so in my humble opinion you ought teach him that your word is your bond and give him your gun. Otherwise what you're teaching him is that he can do what he wants, and a promise has no meaning, and quite frankly the world has too many snowflakey people like that in it.

2) Thanks to another forumite, I just got a detailed peek inside one of those RAW offset moderators, and what I saw left me dismayed and disappointed in ways I have difficulty describing. I can't speak to how the rest of the gun is engineered, but what I saw inside that moderator was enough that I swore off ever owning a RAW. (and I say this as someone perfectly capable of designing a world class mod to muzzle an airgun) My point? I'm obviously not you, but if I were I'd sell the RAW. If you don't want to do that, throw away that factory mod and fake shroud and replace them with a decent new mod that ought be a fraction the weight and substantially quieter.

3) Regarding your other son, it strikes me you've got a stable of three world class bottle guns, and I see no reason why the Brocock would need something to be on the level of the others..... unless it is one of the lower tier variants that is sans regulator? If so, it seems the logical and least expensive option is to sink some money into a reg and, if necessary/he wants, a new barrel. A nice dip/paint job on the stock should round out the package. Seems the obvious route to me.

Anyway, just bouncing some ideas off you. I hope nothing there crossed the line. Spending quality time shooting with your sons is always a good thing. :)

I really look forward to the times when my two sons come home from college and we do some airgun shooting together, and I'm always noticing they choose the most challenging targets on the range over easier ones! Your young son having responsibility for an expensive item may teach him something about life's lessons on the way to maturity. I'd imagine you will have to set some boundaries and guidelines for an 11 year old with a weapon that is not a Daisy BB gun.

Hey, if he completely loses interest in shooting at some point (hopefully not), you could always trade him back for something he wants ; - )...

You guys missed the point, my son is going to get my Impact. I would never break my word or my son's trust in me. It's all the same to me, we take turns shooting all the guns. It's not really like it's mine or his, or Cooper's. We share them all and take turns. I shoot a lot more than they do during the week, so I can use whatever gun I want. As for Cooper, the Brocock is a great gun and it's not going anywhere. Him wanting a new gun is just a perfect excuse for us to buy an Uragan. I was just playing around to make an interesting read. Maybe I should have been more clear with my ending. That's the woohoo part where I say it won't be much of a problem at all, we'll have a full stable of great guns!

As far as the moderator, I was told that making modifications won't make much of a difference, we'll see. I really don't need a super quiet gun, I just like them quiet. I'm going to make some modifications anyway, if it's not effective, I can just buy two new spacers and then have Neil make me a shroud/moderator. I've opened up every silencer I've ever owned to see the interior design and can see the design flaw of the RAW moderator but I don't know if I have the tools to make it much better. It's not obnoxious or anything, just not as quiet as I'd like. Swearing off a RAW because of the moderator is a huge mistake, it's not so dissimilar to many moderators, many of which work well. The design flaw is how the air exits the barrel into the moderator.

Very nice story. I used to love shooting with my son. He married a rabid anti gunner though, and buried all his shooting stuff in the back of his storage. So much joy to be had sharing something like that with your sons and daughters. Hell.. I have a GREAT time sharing those moments with ANYONE'S sons or daughters.

You'll love the Uragan. It's a phenomenal rifle.
