My uncle called them 'fools hen', as here in the NorCal mountains, they are not that fast and often rely on their color to blend in to their surroundings and avoid predators. Then they fly off when you are almost up and stepping on them. On a quad it's easier. Now they are almost non-existant here in California as we protect the mountain lions that have all but wiped the grouse out. Sad.
Oh, congrats on your bird, pretty good eating. Native language call them 'diwh-kyowh', which means 'big quail'. Parts are similar to quail, just bigger.
