Got a question to the golfers of this forum

just curious, as to which sport/hobby do you think costs more, golfing or PCP’s? I’m not a golfer at all, but my 22 year old son just started back up and is hooked on golfing. Man, did he luck out. My widowed neighbor passed on her passed husbands custom made titanium golf clubs on to him, with the shafts being made of some type of reflex material? Like I said, I don’t golf, but from what I hear, it’s a very expensive sport to get into.

Im curious as how it compares to this PCP hobby. Let’s keep it apples to apples, and assume a compressor is purchased, along with CF tanks. I say this cause a PRod and a hand pump only owner, would then say that golf costs way more.

For those of you that dove into the rabbit hole deep, keep in mind all the accessories involved, not just the gun(guns)and fill source. The pcp fittings, chronograph, tools for your own maintenance, etc., etc.

And with golf, add range fees, cart rentals, lessons, etc., etc.

You only need 1 set of clubs that are good for let’s say 5 years. In a pro shop good fitted clubs $1500 to $2500 dollars + another 1000 for shoes, bag and accessories. At a public course it cost $70 to $140 to play with cart rental at some clubs it can be $250 for 1 round. To join a private club your talking $3 to $8 thousand to join and it’s still going to cost you another $50 every time you play but you won’t have as long a wait. The top fancyrich people clubs are going to cost you 15 to 25 thousand a year plus a hearty initiation fee. I have one friend in Florida that spends big money on golf. Who even has to spend 15 thousand a year in the club restaurant as part of membership good for his friends as he always picks up the tab.

so golf isn’t that bad money wise to get into but if you want to play every week it’s become a $12,000 a year hobby easily.

ill stick with hunting, fishing and shooting I probably spend $4000 a year on equipment and about the same to go out and shoot.

Golf is by far more expensive. Not up front, like getting all the PCP gear together... but the ongoing cost is what will get you in the end.

Custom made clubs are great --- for the guy who they were made for. It will be rare indeed for them to fit a random person, especially from the other end of the generation spread. What works for an old guy wont be right for a new, young strong kid. IHMO, but I taught golf and sold equipment for 6 years during college and right after. I have more time on the course than I do with the airgun stuff. Both disciplines have "cool kid" stuff that marketers drive the excitement with - "new just released" always sells better than last year - even if it is gimmicky.

Just to begin...

I can shoot at home. I have to go to the golf range or course to play golf.

Shooting can be 20 mins or 10 hours. Golf is a solid 5-7 hours out of the day.

Pellets - I can shoot 20.00 of pellets in a long day, and I bought my own air pressor. I can loose 80.00 of golf balls in a long day, green fees are 50.00+ for 18 and a cart.

Agreed. Golfing every day on a quality course with good equipment will eventually exceed the cost of shooting pellets with the same frequency.

On the other hand. ------------- I pay $2000 a calendar year for unlimited golf on three very fine semi-private courses. I have a very good set of clubs that I purchased from a variety of sources (like e-Bay) for about $1000 total and walk the course with an eye on the rough, so I have not had to buy golf balls since I started playing 30 years ago.

In my case, air gunning can be equal to or even less expensive than the golf I play.

My opinion is after the initial purchase of equipment for either hobby that golf is A more expensive hobby to maintain. I stopped golfing around four years ago because I was tired of spending around $80 around (Greens fees, cart, balls, food and drinks) and feeling miserable if I didn’t play well. After a day of hunting or shooting I always return home feeling great .

Golf cost depends a lot on where you live. My son and I joined a club for only $49 a year for three years. The rub is it is $32 cart rental for the two of us each time we play but that's relatively cheap. We play about 20 times a year so $640 out of my pocket which is about what my new TalonSS cost. The second year would buy a good air tank. My golf clubs were bought at a farm auction for $3, Amish lady listed them as golf sticks so my handicap is playing with sticks, not clubs. I find golf to be a great three to four hours spent with my son quietly enjoying the outdoors.

Part of why I ask this question is a great friend whose an avid golfer always seems to make the same comment every time he comes to my place. When i bust out the my Airguns for us both to shoot, he stares at my little 5’x7’ reload room that also houses all my pcp stuff, and he always comments “all I see around here is a lot of money”. Keep in mind, this a guy that said an $80 scope costs too much for his $175 Chinese beeman break barrel springer.

But when I turn around and ask him about golf expenditures(he golfs every weekend religiously for as long as I have known him) he doesn’t elaborate on his costs. So, I always wondered if golfing was way more inexpensive a hobby compared to PCP guns for him to always make those comments.

Its getting to to the point where I don’t like to have people over cause they don’t understand I guess, that a “pellet gun” hobby can cost $$. I have friends that are into expensive hobbies themselves, such as automotive hop up, classic car collecting, Harley’s galore, etc., but I’m actually happy for them that they enjoy their hobby.
