Go Pro Hero7 Black

Good morning. Last week Brian posted a link to a great sale on Go Pro cameras... $100 off. I looked into it and was told that the Side Shot mounts don't work with the Hero7 Black.

I was then told that they do work but I need to change out the lens on the camera first. 85MM maybe? I can't remember and I can't find that post.

Can someone please fill me in on the details? For the Go Pro Hero7 Black , which lens do I need to buy and where do I get it? Is that the only change necessary?

Thanks, Stoti

Here is a list of what I bought

1- gopro 7 Black I have 2 of them they come standard with a very wide angle lens that doesn’t work well in a Side shot. Through a trade in deal on GoPro site you can get it for 299 plus you need to trade in a old digital camera that can even be broken.

2- 8.25 mm lens for GoPro 7 the GoPro 5,6 and 7 can only use a few different lenses I would prefer a 10 or 12mm lens for use with a GoPro 7 in a sideshot scope mount but inorder to do that you need to get a $900 modified GoPro that can use the old lens thread type.

the 8.25 lens that I bought and it works fine in the GoPro . It’s expensive $140 but when you are the only place selling it you can charge what you want. I followed the directions from Hajimoto’s video which is a decent instructional video.

3- the last piece is the side shot scope mount remember to order with the correct size mount for your scope. A tip when mounting , I found mine gave a sharper image when the mount was around 1/4” from the end of scope. They make another mount for the GoPro 3 and 4 dont get that one.

all together the cost was a bit over $700. I still need to get and learn how to use video editing software I will probably go with Power Director 365 for my PC that is around $70 a year Bob_O recommended it I will probable try it first with their 30 day free trial to see if I can figure it out first.

If you have any more questions pm me with your phone # and a good time to call and I would be happy to talk to you in more detail on what and how I did everything.

Like Brian pointed out, I would suggest a 12mm lens as well. However, I have done some tests with the stock lens and the results were good enough for me. All I had to do was zoom in, in post production.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that I am using a DIY mount. I am able to adjust the distance between the GoPro and mount in order to have the reticle be in focus...

Well, after spending all day I’ve got mine set up. It should not be so darned difficult. No reason that I can see it shouldn’t be set up to drop in and work. This stuff is just not intuitive at all and the video instructions assume that you know some of the basics and of course those of us over 65 frequently do not . My biggest problem was focusing the lens and then adjusting the recording parameters. Trial and lots of errors.

Zooming in will work but it’s digital zoom not optical, the quality of digital zoom goes down the more you zoom if you original .5 in diameter and you you make it 1” you have the same number of pixels but they are stretched out over double the area. If you are only going to be viewing on a phone screen it’s not that noticeable but if you put it on your big screen tv it would be fuzzy looking.

now this it very important REMEMBER the threads that the lens screws into in the GoPro body are different in the GoPro 5,6and 7. The 3 and 4 which have been for a while has many lens available at good prices but they won’t fit in the new cameras if you try you will ruin the camera.

here is an article on the difference between digital and optical zoom

always do it optically if possible if your planning on watching your videos on a big screen it’s really required.

i will probably get a 12mm lens for my GoPro 7 when they become available. Until then the 8.25 is the best option and I thank Hajimoto for bringing that to my attention.

just for everyone’s info the GoPro 3 and 4 have a lens thread that is M12 X .50 the GoPro 5,6 and 7 have a M12 X .35 thread so it’s also it’s a square plug in a round hole if you try it

One thing that I tried gave the most improvement in picture quality. It might only pertain to certain scopes but I loosen the the 2 knobs that clamp on to the 2 rods of the side shot and then slightly pulled the side shot away from the eye piece. What I think it did was it got the focus distance of the camera in sync with the eye relief of the scope.
