Gary Cane Stock for Steyr Hunter Scout Auto Arrived

Fixed all the places where my spell check "helped" me misspell Gary's last name.

These are pictures of the Steyr Hunter Scout stock Gary Cane built for me. I just received it this week. The comb is adjustable with an Allen screw (I didn't want a knob. The trigger guard is metal.

For those who might be interested in the weight of this stock vs. the original walnut from Steyr I weighed the rifle with the walnut stock and this stock. The difference is .26 (4.16 ounces) of a pound. I weighed the rifle with a set of Sportsmatch Rings, SWFA 10x42 Tactical scope (1.31 pounds), Donny FL LDC. The rifle with walnut scope was 9.42 pounds. With the laminate GaryCrane it is 9.68. I was pleasantly surprised. I didn't want the stock to be much heavier than the original walnut.

I love the thumb hole and contoured "pistol" grip. The only thing I don't "love", and is the same with other PCPs I've owned, the fore end sling swivel post has to be placed so far from the end to get into thick enough wood that the gun wants to tilt back more than I like when slung over the shoulder. Of course someone on this site suggested I sling it upside down. That will work. If I had to do it over I'd probably leave the fore end swivel post off and go with the air tube clamp made for my FX Wildcat. It does add a little weight but is really a slick way to do it.

I got the idea about this stock from folks on here like Michael and Eric. I ordered in February and received it in July. It took about 3-4 weeks for delivery because of the way UK has to ship to the US. It had to go to AoA before it came to me.

Famous last words I know, but this rifle and its companion LP 50 HP Compact (Pistol) which I also own, satisfies my appetite for new air rifles. Unless this became available in .25 (my rifle is .22 and the LP is .177) I can't see myself buying another. Squirrel season opens here in KY the 3rd Saturday in August. I plan on on guarding a shagbark hickory grove that morning with my grandson.

I'll add pictures of the full rifle soon.

Gary sends you questions. I measured LOP and sent him a tracing of my hand. We discussed options and what I wanted. Because I wanted to maintain the one of main attractions to the Hunter Scout....sporting use. My actual LOP is on the short side (even he remarked) at about 2.75". But, I asked him to make it more like 13" so, IF I ever decided to resale the rifle my market would be larger than 4th or 5th graders. ? I adjust the trigger shoe to the right which gives me a nice placement for the trigger finger. Of course you also choose the color of wood, if laminate, that you want. I chose Field and Stream because I wanted a bit of blue and brown in the stock. Mountain Camp is also nice but without the blue. I realize that blue is a color birds can see, but I don't hunt birds with an air rifle. Squirrels don't see blue which is too bad for them. (I'm retired wildlife biologist).

The order was placed via e-mail. I paid $200 down and a bit over $800 the week the stock was being built. This included what was more than $100 for shipping (to AoA and them to me). Gary was terrific to deal with in terms of discussing options and explaining the AoA link of this shipping project.

Roy

P.S. When he asked for my I.Q. he told me that didn't have a caliber that low. ?

Here are a few more photos. This one has the Huggett Belita installed and a new blue trigger shoe. I like the shoe.

Who knows "why" I do much of what I do with my equipment. I could easily get "by" with a .410/.22 over and under for almost all my hunting needs, just like. my Dad did. I know I have never tricked out anything like I have this Steyr. I sold a Merkel PBer that was too pretty to use and a custom recurve bow to cover the budget on this rig.

This is purely a squirrel hunter and plinker for me. I don't even (yet) practice very far. I just fell in love with the Gary Cane stock when I first saw it on a couple of other Hunter Scouts. Since I had never even looked through a FFP scope, let alone own one, I decided to bite the bullet and go as far as I'm willing on the March.

I "blame" this site for "inspiring me". You can see I cut the foam for the standard Scout stock and a fixed 10 SWFA. Had to modify it for this new combo.

I did forego the bipod mount and comb screw knob to keep the weight down a bit. I also hunt without the scope caps and only 4 pellets in the 5-shot magazine to cut down on weight a bit more (kidding of course).
