FX slug liner alternative

I don't think these will work, 1st the caliber is wrong a .22 air rifle and .22 rimfire are not the same.

2nd the FX Liner is a floating liner it is actually a barrel (even though it's being called a liner) these liners that are being sold are designed to be pressed into a old barrel to referb it

3rd not trying to sound crass or disrespectful but if I spend that much money on a gun I'm not going to risk messing up my breach block with an unknown entity

Willie,

Not sure where the message was missed but these liners would be to shoot .223 bullets , not pellets . I get that these are designed to be pressed into an old barrel but they are in fact the same dimensions as the existing X liners in OD which means they will slide into the already machined barrel sleeve just like the FX liner , no difference . As far a messing up a breech block , I just don’t see how this would . I’ve got a few on order and will gladly post my findings once I have it fitted .

There will be some machining needed , cut to length, crown , cut the leade. I’ve got quite a few .223, .224 and .225 molds that I plan on shooting from my Impact X and right now the FX liners are .217” for both “slug and pellet “ which simply adds to much sizing to get them down to the right diameter.

With minimum machining these would work. I've always wondered how a .22 jacketed round would perform in an Impact or the like.

I doubt a jacketed bullet would work at our relatively low pressures . I dont know if it’s ever been tried so I can comment any further on that .

I’ve got a .223 chamber cutter and a lathe to do the prep work to the barrel once it gets here . I have yet to do any real chrony work on my Impact but I’m hoping for 60fpe with the possibility of adding a plenum extension . The guys at JSAR are testing pretty much the same idea only using a TJ’s barrel ,so I know I’m not the only one that thinks this is doable .

A jacketed bullet would shoot terrible out of the Impact, doesn't come close to the power needed to push them. The liners are like soda straws and can see the possibility of them cracking under stress. The 27" barrels are how the guns make enough power to shoot slugs, I think the liner is more of a cost effective way to produce barrels. Not necessarily better than something like a TJ or Polygonal. To really shoot slugs well I think a gun may need to start with that specific purpose in mind, much beyond just a barrel.

Got the barrels today and went straight to work on fitting one to the FX impact. The barrels were both received in good condition ( thanks Knife) the unfinished length at 27 1/2” and an OD of .311” . First was to cut to length at 600mm , next was to cut a crown and last was to work the leade .
The FX having a thimble makes fitting this barrel a real breeze and could be done with nothing more than basic hand tools . I polished the bore with a couple hundred strokes of both fine and ultra fine JB bore paste .I don’t think the barrel even needed it as the riffling appeared to be really well cut with no chatter marks ,smearing or rough lands . Not what I was expecting from a 40$ barrel liner .
The barrel liner slid right in the outer barrel sleeve with a couple orings just like the OEM barrel liner . In the pics , you can see a step in the rifling but that was cut off as I suspect that was to show which end was to be the breech end .
Now how does it shoot ? I did go to the closest shooting spot I have and ran some different sized bullets through. I was shooting the 225-39 FN GC ( from the magazine ) The initial testing shows some great promise . This will open up more possibilities for shooting a variety of cast slug shooter from the impact as there are quite a few molds from .222” to .225 “that will fit the new magazines .

Ok more testing done . Shot at 50 and 75 yards . Using the same 225-39 FNGC bullets at just over 750 FPS ( that’s all I can get out of the Impact) at 50 the groups were at 5/8” and at 75 we’re just over 1” . The groups are opening up a bit but I suspect it’s the slow speed I’m shooting them at not to mention I didn’t weigh or sort the bullets after casting .

So if anyone has any 223 or bigger bullets they want to try from their Impact or other FX with the x liner system ,this liner seems like it’s the way to go . The might just have to get my Impact up to 60 + FPE to really see what the liner can do .

Very nice! I'm making pretty big power with my Crown Continuum, even with the 380mm barrel, which is designed only for pellets. I need to get a more aggressive short barrel, so this might be a fun thing to experiment with.
