I've been thinking of a decent entry level rifle for HFT. I have several precision PCP rifles, but all are .22 and well over 20 fpe. I have a Royale 400 in .22, and have been very impressed with its accuracy and reliability. The trigger is no Steyr for sure, but I think it is acceptable. I never hear of the Royale used in FT, and I don't think I've seen one in the results available online, but it seems, in .177 it might not be a bad choice. Anyway, just wondering if anyone has experience with it in FT, or could offer some observations.

I just went through this yesterday lol. 22 is fine to start hft and compete locally to see how you like it. In fact there are a few dudes at my club that run 22 cals exclusively. I started with my dads gamo urban and did ok. Once you really get into it I believe you will want a 177 to give you that tiny edge over 22.that being said I'm excited about getting an hw97 in 20 cal. Are springers better than pcp for competition... Nope. Does 20 cal hold an advantage? Double no. Why then? Because I think it's pretty and I like beautiful airguns. Just have fun with it and use what you got. After you get all serious you will know more about what you need or want. Jmo good luck friend.

Good friend of mine that just passed away used to use a Royal 400 in .177cal and do very well, I have one in .22cal it's a great gun, the trigger is wonderful and is still factory set, I'm mainly using this gun for hunting so I don't want it like my AA EV2 MkII but still the trigger is very smooth.
While I like the gun very well my opinion is your shooting your self in the foot trying to use a .22cal in feildtarget, the reason for that statement is my gun puts out 28.27flbs on full power, 16.36 flbs on the middle setting and 10.50 flbs on lowest power with the JSB 15.89gr pellets, so now your stuck in the middle setting, a
rainbow trajectory and .22 diameter to boot, the kill zone holes are only so big and catching the edge of that hole (a splitter) only gives you so much energy left so who knows if it's going down?
If you really did your homework/rangetime you could deal with the trajectory but the .22 would be a no go for me.

I shoot with someone frequently who uses an FX Royale in .177 and is one of the best FT shooters I know. Of course, lots has to do with his ability, but just saying that the Royale can, and is being used at a fairly high level of competition. Now the .177 vs. the .22 issue is well covered on this and many other threads and is a slightly different subject than your question.

i have one set up for ft. in 177. shoots right up there with my red wolf.. i would be comfortable using either one. good choice imo

Thanks for the input, and no, I was not suggesting FT with my .22, which is why I was thinking about the Royale in .177. If I were to give it a try with one of my current rifles, I would probably tune down my RAW, or, my Red Wolf on low power might make the 20 fpe limit, I need to chrono the low setting.
