FX Quality Issues

I've been drooling over the FX Wildcat for some time now and think I've settled on the .25 compact version. However I came across some threads and videos regarding FX regulator quality issues. Most recently this one while searching for Wildcat reviews on Youtube.

It seems the factory FX regulators may have some QC issues, and many buyers simply replace with a HUMA reg. This adds another $115 to your gun purchase should you draw the short straw and get bad FX reg. The FX warranty should cover such issues but not sure I want to ship my gun over the pond for repairs. Anyway just curious if others have had QC issues with their Wildcat. Also, which online vendor would you recommend purchasing your airgun? Utah, AOA, Airgun Depot, Palm Beach, etc. Thanks.

Bob can best address the issue of the regulator replacement but I wanted to add that any warranty repair would most likely be done here in the States by FX USA in the Carolinas. BTW FX recently bumped its warranty period to three years. As far as a vendor goes I live in California and chose Utah Airguns as they have a good rep and deliveries are fast. Best of luck

PS By way of comment about air gunners and their acquisitive nature I’d bet that a lot of owners would spring for a Huma just to have one in their airgun. We are after all, simply Airgun-Ho’s

same quality with my 1995.00 dollar fx crown, almost 6 months & hundreds of dollars spent on pellets, scopes, chronys & list goes on & on ...airgun depot would not do anything because i had a bi-bod installed.(nothing wrong with the wood)..in no way should a gun costing this much shoot the first pellet 20-30-40fps slower than the rest of the mag.& group like a shot gun at 50 yards...my advice -- get your money back as fast as you can.....good luck!!

Ok.

This may well be the Perfect response to the "I would like to start out shooting airguns. Thinking about a pcp, what should I buy?" question...and the response being, " I recommend jumping in w/both feet and GO BIG!"

Yeah, spend over $2000.00 or Much More when all is said and done, including fill source, optics, mounts, ect. The new shooter has scraped up the change,in some cases...begged the spouse, ate sack lunches for two months and auctioned off the cat.

After ALL the excitement and expectations, the big day arrives!! aaand... He/She ends up with This mans story.

This is where I lose the "Popularity Contest". If I spend my hard earned money (Make that A Lot of my hard earned money!!)...I'm expecting that a portion of that to go to Quality Control! I understand that "things happen"...but some of these issues I've read about right here,on This forum (One that sticks in my mind is an inoperable saftey, right out of the box!) are inexcusable! I don't know about the Rest of you,but I don't have the level of disposable income to just be "ho-hum" about having an immediate issue upon receiving a High Dollar product.

Back to our "New Guy". Not only will this experience Totally let the air out of his sails,I'm sure his enthusiasm regarding airguns has been Totally deflated...plus his spouse is pissed about the waste of money that could have been better used Elsewhere ( I'd have to agree.) ...not to mention,he's now out 1 cat.

To make matters worse, you can bet your ass that he is going to tell anyone that will listen NOT to waste their time with these "F-ing airguns!".

My point? (If you didn't get it) For such a High Dollar product,it seems like the quality control department should be getting paid well enough to do an Exceptional (Not mediocre) Job. And if there Is an oversight on their behalf, put some of the effort used to pump out the product into more timely (At least in This case) service issue resolution.

I have the wildcat compact and have had no issues with it at all! As far as quality control I thought I read somewhere that Ernest’s inspects all of the guns when they arrive. I could be wrong on that though. As far as where to buy it I would recommend Utah Airguns I think they also do some testing of the gun for you before they ship it out.

My 2 year old Wildcat was out of the box accurate and to date, having never even cleaned the barrel, it remains that way. Same for my old T12, straight out of the box accurate and trouble free. I just bought a used (less than 1 year old) Crown from a member here and I couldn't be more pleased with it. But I totally dislike the need to ship a gun back to the factory for service and the previous 1 year warranty. 3 years is an improvement, but having a local service rep (like they used too) would be even better.

Having to wait weeks or even months for warranty work is ridiculous IMO so I moved to Daystate. To date I've been completely disappointed with the guns, overall QC, and the attitude of the manufacturer. I'll be heading back to AOA next week with the Pulsar again...

Bottom line: Even with high end guns, it's the luck of the draw.

As a side note to the individual who under anonymity gave me a negative mark, stating that I'm "sour" because I "can't afford a high-end pcp"...you have NO CLUE! LMAO!

Thing is,I Have money because I'm Wise in how I spend it!

Don't you go worrying about MY finances muchacho, most likley much to your dismay...I'm doin Just Fine!

That's messed up. Kids these days.

So I'm just going to throw this out there: you're far far FAR from the only one who has been mistreated by Airgun Depot. I'm genuinely surprised there aren't more harsh words for them in this community, as voiding a gun's warranty because you installed a rail is ridiculous. Furthermore if you contact FX's USA service center, I have every expectation they'll not only take care of you, but will also probably make note of how the Depot treated you.

As far as issues with FX and airguns in general go, I want to point a couple things out:
1) So far as I can tell every airgun manufacturer has issues. This isn't because they're malicious, but because airguns are complex and fickle devices. Take one example of o-rings can fail in a variety of different ways due to incredibly subtle tolerances and situations. If the inside of your reg has too coarse a scratch pattern or there is a tiny bur it can cause your o-ring to slowly tear and fail over time. (something which QC would struggle to catch, as the gun will leave the factory working) At the opposite end if your reg is too polished inside, the o-ring will squeegee off the lubricant and it'll start to stick giving inconsistent pressure outputs.

2) Forums/the internet are bad at identifying brands which have issues, and not a little bad, really REALLY bad. All we see are the failure reports, and a confirmation bias begins to form, quickly causing some brands to develop an unsubstantiated bad reputation. Also brands which sell greater volumes are a lot more likely to have failure reports pop up, not because they have a bad failure rate, but just because there are a larger volume of people who have issues. FX I suspect is suffering from this, as compared to say Daystate, because I suspect their sales volumes are much MUCH larger. Look at the infrastructure they've been able to build out as a result. I don't think it is because they make crap guns, far far from it (I own one, and it works fantastic, has straight out of the box) but I think they make more guns.

3) Above all other brands in the airgun industry I've seen, FX is the one who is most relentless in their pursuit of CQI or Constant Quality Improvement. They are incessantly tweaking, changing, and improving every detail of their guns. Many people don't realize this, but doing that is a nightmare of inventory, parts, dev cycles, etc on the back end. All outward appearances are that they do it because they're genuinely committed to making world class guns at really great prices, and always want to be better and do better. This contrasts with another very prominent brand on here who, when confronted with a clear and obvious design defect, their response was to say "it isn't a problem, we've been doing it like this since 2003" and then having the thread locked.

4) If you go digging, every relevant brand has someone who has had an issue with their gun. No exceptions.

5) Haters love to try and take a bite out of whoever is most successful. Right now that, by all outward appearances, is FX. You've even got guys on this forum who have never in their life owned or worked on an FX who will confidently tell you that FX is crap. Others bought an FX, and due to user error, a manufacturing issue, or just unrealistic expectations were disappointed and now like to take a bite out of them.

So my advice is to buy from a good reputable dealer, and buy the gun you want. If it is the FX Wildcat, then go for it! There are overwhelmingly more Wildcat owners on here who love their guns than ones who have had issues. My personal suggestion is Utah Airguns, as I've had great experiences with them, they test every gun before it goes out (mine came with chrono and a test target IIRC), have good prices, and offer great support. If you want a different sort of gun, then go for that. My final piece of advice is don't string yourself out on the high wire of expectation. A lot of guys get a gun and are so panicky for it to be perfect that they start seeing issues which aren't there. Just something to keep in mind.

Thanks for all the replies, comments, and opinions. I understand, like all things, you need to perform routine maintenance and repair/replace things when the break down. Howver, when you spend a lot of money for premium equipment you have certain expectations, quality and performance being high on my list. However, I appreciate STO’s comments and completely understand not everyone is perfect and things happen.

My first airgun was a Benjamin Titan (gas springer) and I went through various “tune-ups” to maximize performance but grew tired of poor accuracy and finicky hold. About 3 years ago I made a big leap and purchased a Daystate Regal XL (.22). I love that gun. Aside from the extraordinary cocking effort, it is a beautiful airgun with precision to match. For being unregulated, the fps deviation over 40 shots is better than most regulated guns. Another reason I like the Regal was that I could get it in left-hand. It would be nice if FX made an ambidextrous Wildcat, but alas I’ll need to 3D print a left hand cheek piece. I like Wildcat for it compact design, good aesthetics, and reputation for being a great gun. It sounds like FX is now using their new AMP regualtor in the Wildcat? If so, then maybe the reg issue has already been resolved.

Hello all, i have a wildcat .25 and noticing some accuracy issues lately. I will get 3 or 4 shots hole in hole then next 3 or 4 high or low. Also noticing moisture build up on the outside of cheek piece...is this moisture normal and if not could ther be a seal leak causing accuracy issues? Also barrel has been cleaned, everything is all stock never done anything to gun at all. Thanks.

I had the same reservations as you before I bought my Wildcat Compact. Airguns are complex devices and things can fail. One of the main reasons I chose FX was parts/service. I know I won't be left hanging should something go wrong. I've only owned my Wildcat for about six months. So far I've been quite pleased. I'm sure there are people who have had a different experience than I. The new three year warranty gives me confidence that FX stands behind their products. It took me months to make up my mind on my first PCP. So far I'm not regretting my decision.

Well off my Crown goes for the second time. It is my fault, I did it! I installed two HUMA manometers and now I cant get any air out of the gun. Can't figure that out so back it goes.

I did do the research before buying the Crown and did not buy from the big box boys. I bought it from Precision with no worries. They (BBB) won't work on what they don't sell. That is just not acceptable to me. So they get my ammo business when there is a killer deal. Or i need something quick. But my major purchases? NFW. I'll support the little man.

Martin will send my( new to me) RAW out tomorrow after going clear through it and maxing out the power for me. So I'll be hot again next weekend. As a note to those on the fence buying a "high end" gun. I started out low dollar and was not happy with the quality, accuracy, none of it. If you are into precision shooting these FX, Daystate, what ever you choose, are going to need attention. If your of a mechanical mind, your fortunate to have that gift. Otherwise expect to spend some money modifying and maintaining these hot rods. Its worth it to me. I get a TREMENDOUS amount of satisfaction seeing a sub MOA group form at 100 yards with a powder burner sitting next to me that can't print a group like that. I'm will to pay a bit to feed the need.

In addition to my previous comments,

1) I certainly have No axe to grind against those who choose upper end pcp's. It's just that for myself,I cant justify spending the extra cash to do the job that I can accomplish (at least with ME doing the shooting!) as well as do (and ENJOY!) for quite a bit less expense. In other words,I can't see spending $1000.00+ more for a replacement to what already works quite well for me.

2) I don't recall mentioning FX. Those who seem to be the most "butt-hurt" about about my comments and opinion ( We are All allowed to have one...unless I'm mistaken there,as Well) are putting me on blast for disparaging the FX name,in particular. Hmm.

3) Where others spend their money is None of my business. I do ,however, try to be helpful to others on this forum...and in everyday life,as Well.

4) I believe that WHAT you shoot or how much a person SPENDS doesn't justify Your worth as an airgunner.

5) At a motocross seminar I attended, the instructor told us, "Most of us think we're better than we actually are." This doesn't apply strictly to riding a motorcycle...and I'm personally humble enough to admit it!

As I stated, "This is where I lose the Popularity Contest" ...ah well, what were discussing here are airguns. There are bigger things goin on in life. Myself? I sleep pretty good at night. LOL!
