FX Liners, Twist Rate ... Confusion

Hi Everyone

I have been reading over here about twist rates on STX and Slug Liners and I have to say. I AM PRETTY CONFUSED

1- It is right to measure the twist rate of an FX liner from the outside? (following 1 grove)

2- What are the tr of STX and Slug Liners on 0.22 and 0.25? (I have read a lot of different measures)

3- Does the length of the barrel/liner change the twist rate over 500mm 600mm and 700mm?

Thanks in advance!

I honestly think the root to the confusion is that they don’t make them all the same, FX is famous for changing on the fly, I have 7 liners, 2 sets of (A) liners in 25 cal and 2 in 22; they are not identical at all, but hell I don’t really care? They all shoot pretty damn good and they even like different pellets in one case, can’t beat that for 100 bucks. Just my 2 cents.

Thanks! you are right! if they shoot ok, but now with the slug liners and not shooting ok, and not been able to identify the liners correct, how do we know is a slug liner? How do we know that the vendor maybe made a mistake? (and for experience that happens a lot), how do we know for sure that what you bought is really the right one? the only way (and please if there is another let me know) is measuring the twist rate...and now there are many...so ... more confusing!

It's completely frustrating that FX doesn't specify twist rates, and not marking the liners is just a cruel practical joke. You see statements like " Lighter slugs will typically shoot better out of shorter barrels ". When I was deciding which barrel length to get, no one could (or would) explain what that statement meant. Based on user measurements I now believe that they DO change the twist rate for the barrel length, which is sort of an alien concept. I can imagine a number of reasons why FX won't publish these specs, but none of them are for the good of the customer. FX clearly does a lot of things right, but they do an equal number of things wrong. I do love my Impact though.

@rusty totally agree! Very frustrated, staring to think about lw poligonal...

@bob_o that is supposed to be the latest on 22, I bought one in February and is 1:18 an sucks! (And I believe UA send me an old one, but how do I make a complain if there is no official info!) And the funny thing is my pellet liner 1:19 (all from the outside), shoot slugs good. (All in 22)

My 600mm .22 was from the first batch that AOA got, and it's 1:18. Your thread is the first I've heard of a 1:16 version, but now I want it. Actually I'd like to have a 1:16 700mm version so I could cut off the choke and try that in my 600mm barrel. Now that I think about it, I wonder if they changed the choke in any way between the 1:18 and 1:16 versions? There's a very noticeable choke still on the 1:18 I have, which you can feel if you push a slug through manually.

I am really liking the input on this thread and have been trying (along with the rest of you) to put my finger on liner science? Other than what I said on my previous post, I have learned that slugs seem to be very, very finicky! So in 25 cal my liner is real close to 1 to19.250”? Hand written 25 cal slug liner on the tube btw? But after 6 different slugs, Neilson and knockers (thanks bob o,) only 1 will shoot acceptable and only if it is moving over 850, which took some doing, crazy thing is, 1” at 25 yds 5 shots, 1” ish at 50, 1 “ ish at 100? 33 grn knocker, which is .001 bigger than Neilson’s by my mic? Again my 2 cents, but I’m about out of slug money? Oh also, my slug liner for example shoots 33 knocker at 870 ish, that same setting will shoot 34 grn heavys 900 in an A liner, so faster rate of twist takes its toll.

I recommend sending an email to [email protected] and ask him the specs of barrel liners. If you ask him questions he doesn't want to answer he may send you free parts to get you to leave him alone. That was the response I got when I asked why FX USA and the "dealer network" refuse to sell extra tubes for FX moderators after advertising them as "stackable".

I was prompted to do a bit of searching, and found that Palm Beach Airguns has the 700mm .22 liners in stock. I emailed them yesterday to verify that it was 1:16 twist, and ordered one. My plan will be to first push a pellet through to see if there's still a choke, then cut it off to work with my 600mm barrel.

That seems to be the only slug liner they have at the moment, but they also appear to have a limited number of barrel kits in stock with the DonnyFL suppressor. It's REALLY nice having an actual stock indication on the item. Nearly every other airgun web site should take note.

Is my understanding that on 0.22 there is a Gen1 1:18 and a Gen2 1:16 the problem is that I Bought very recently hoping to get the 1:16 and BIG surprise! got the 1:18, so basically UA send to me a very OLD liner...what a joke!

on my 0.22 My pellet liner is 1:19 and shoot slugs way better than the slug liner 1:18, so I wonder about 0.25 1:19 might be right

Yesterday shooting slugs on my pellet liner @50 meters / 55 yards

VN = Vermin Knockers, the 24 gn are actually 2 groups

Also give it a try to the 30gn 0.22 NSA, and to my surprise

I "had to" order a 700 mm slug liner, should arrive next week. Probably 1:16 tr

Joel at PBA seems great. He replied to messages over the weekend, and I already have a tracking number for the liner. They have 600mm barrel assemblies in stock with the DonnyFL suppressor, and it's really tempting to have a second barrel.

The results you got with the pellet liner are amazing. I've never shot the pellet liner at all, since I got the barrel specifically to shoot the slug liner. It still annoys me that you can't buy the barrel assembly with either your choice of liner, or no liner at all. That's what stops me from buying a second 600mm barrel because I don't need a second pellet liner. I may ask Joel about that.

Keep up the good work. I have to admit that I haven't shot anything in weeks. I've been tied up with one of my other expensive hobbies.

The slug liners have only been out for a month or two so "very OLD" is not an accurate description.

Knowing there are two different twist rates, unless you asked for one and not the other, how can you fault the vendor for sending you what they had on hand?

The slugs liners have been getting to dealers is small batches and as far as I can tell, they don't last long.

True "very old" is an overstatement, old one is enough, but that is not the point. I bought my liner before you get yours, and the most important thing in liners is probably the twist rate. If you think the vendor has not fault selling you an old gen liner bought in February 2019 (when all came in 1:16 probably), and 3 weeks after I made a complaint about it I get no answers, then we have a very different point of view. There is a reason why FX release a Gen2 slug liner with a twist rate of 1:16 . At the time I bought the liner, I did not know there are differences on twist rates, but for sure UA knew. In my books if they send what they have on hand is not the way to go. Then it was my "fault" probably for not knowing that there are 2 models at that time?.

If information where available, I would agree with you, but the lack of it is the problem! (and the point of this thread, to gather more info)

I agree, he is always replying very fast...guess I will take my future business to him. (already did)

On the pellet liner that was a big surprise to me too...imagine if they were shooting bad + having a slug liner that does also! I will be chatting already with the contact that heavy-impact mention :)
