FX interchangeable barrel question…

I’ve never handled an Impact or their barrels so I’m trying to understand why a different barrel sleeve is required when swapping calibers.

Obviously, each caliber will require its own liner, pellet probe and magazine but why should the barrel sleeve need to be changed?

The Impact’s receiver accepts all the calibers so that is a constant. Whatever fit or clearances between the barrel sleeve and the Impact’s frame also accommodates all calibers so that is not an issue. So as far as I can determine without drawings to refer to or an Impact to look at is that the fit of the liner to the sleeve is the only thing that needs to be addressed.

So, without knowing any better, my question is why can’t I just buy the largest (.30) barrel sleeve in the length that I want and machine a couple of bushings (outside diameter to suit the sleeve; inside diameter to suit the liner) to suit?

It seems to be a simple solution so I must be missing something. Can anybody shed some light on this?

Thanks

Hank

The liner needs to fit into the breech fitting. So yeah, I agree you could create the bushings (even if just oring spacers) around the liner, but you'd still need a barrel sleeve with the right sized breech fitting. The breech fitting could be machined to match too but not as easy to swap that part on the end of the sleeve. I guess you could experiment with fittings that attach to the liner and 'fit' into the breech

Each liner in different cal have different thickness. All outer barrel sleeves are the same that's why it accept all cal. The barrels liner nut at the end and also the barrel attachment have different diameter to hold the correct liner. So putting a .177 liner into a .25 sleves will be too loose. And putting a .25 liner into a .177 will not fit, too large. Just buy the correct liners to the correct barrel or just get the barrel kit that comes with everything.

This subject has come up before. I read on a post somewhere that FX does not sell the barrel attachment and or the barrel liner lock as separate parts? As seen in edosan's post. So one must purchase the complete barrel if you want to change calibers. Although I have noticed that both parts are sold here.

Thanks for the comments!

Still thinking about this, guess it will have to wait until I get my hands on an Impact to look at.

@bucketboy Please post some details when you get around to that project!

Ok will do.

the idea is simple, put a bush on the smallest liner you have so that it matches the Dia of the largest, that’s the fit into the sleeve sorted

replace the calibre specific lock nut with a modified er16 collet chuck as used in engineering, this allows any Dia within the collets range to be precisely and securely held without damage, it wouldn’t matter what length liner was used if the sleeve was made to fit the shortest because the collet grips the liner not pushing on the end as in the impact. That the fixing sorted.

modify the breech end of the barrel sleeve to fit interchangeable breech bushings to suit each calibre.

The only other part that would need making is a custom shroud support that fits over the barrel sleeve as the 1/2unf barrel nut is no longer in use.

Job done!

the only reason I haven’t done it yet is I only have one liner, when I get others, modifying the barrel sleeve/liner assembly will be top of the list.

here is the er16 collet chuck I will use..
