FX Impact slug trouble

This is from Matt Dubber after I asked him his experience so far with the liners and slugs:

Ok, 3 inches is horrible but I’d need more info to solve the problem, if he is shooting them too slow they won’t stabilize because the twist isn’t that fast. If he is getting good accuracy with the pellets and other slugs then I don’t see how the barrel could be a problem, he might just be shooting the wrong size / weight slugs at the wrong speed. I’ve seen some horrible groups at 50 with the slug liners but only when using the wrong length/size/velocity. He should buy a testing pack of .217 and .218 23 and 27gr slugs and shoot them at minimum 880fps

So i received my .22 slug liner in the mail finally! Super excited i put it in and ran straight outside to shoot my new Varmint Knocker and NSA slugs.... whew... that was rough. The NSA slugs were about 3” at 50 yards and the VK slugs were decent at about .75” at 50 yards. But the JSB 18 grain heavies absolutely stole the show at under .5” easily at 50. Tried several velocities, reg pressures, and hammer settings, but nothing seemed to get the accuracy i was expecting... maybe my bar was set a little high, but i felt like i should get at least .5” at 50 yards. Anyone having success that might share some tuning tips on these slugs? I need all the help i can get!!!

The Varmintknockers 22.5 grain like a speed thats a little faster

This is a photo that someone sent me , please notice the speed

at 970 fps for 6 shots .

Slugs excel at range so in most guns diabolo pellets will out shoot a slug in group size. At distance, like 100 yards, that is not always the case and at greater distances slugs will often beat a pellet's group size. The other factor is wind. If you are shooting in wind the slug performance is far superior to a diabolo pellet and you will use less wind hold over with a slug. Additionally the slug will carry much more energy down range because of it's higher BC so for hunting a slug is a great option. If you punching holes in paper or only shooting 50 yards I would stick with pellets.

Matt I don't know if this is awe worthy but Claudio sent me this group he shot with my 23 grain slug in a Commander .22, he did not specify the range but he normally sends me 50 or 100 meter pics. The shot up high I don't if that was sighter or what; he sent me the picture with the circled group and said he shot it at 860 fps.

I would say that is very impressive Neilsen, and at 860 fps to boot, hard to believe! I hope you don't take offense to my post earlier... My problem is this though, most people are going to try to get the pictured accuracy you shown with these new slug liners and they may be disappointed. I hope I am wrong and they all perform just as you pictured...but from the overwhelming amount of groupings I've seen slugs shoot, they're generally lack luster in the ragged hole department at almost any range. If you and FX really dialed things in and that is a thing of the past, thats brilliant. I know you've put in ENDLESS hours and research into getting your craft mastered, you've come a long way and I respect that. Any and all contributions you make to the air gun community are going to live longer than you! Truly..good work.

I don't mean to discourage anyone from attempting to go the slug route with their air gun, I just feel historically they have performed not as well as diablo pellets in the accuracy department and generally come at a high cost of air usage, and create the condition of potential over penetration and flying to unintended things with lots of remaining energy. I am not against them I am just weary about them becoming too popularized and airguns being lumped with firearms even more then they already are...my city already looks at them equally as many do, and that train may be too far gone to turn back around so maybe my reluctance to really accept slugs becoming popularized is moot. Sorry for the rant and Happy holidays! Shoot whatever kind of lead you want, just be safe!
