BLACK MAMBA: FX IMPACT "DETUNING" BenchRest 25y

My shooting buddy and I have been talking for a while about the Fx impacts being competitive in 25m br, barrels are fine, the triggers “TERRIBLE” the mag. Feed not so good but fixable? Think it might be inconsistent in the bags but believe it’s doable? Could be a fun experiment! Next problem is it might chew up valuable time away from our primary 25m competition guns! there are very, very good shooters in our club, so if you don’t practice with your primary gun to stay consistent with that gun you will fall behind FAST!

Yes, I haven't seen many shooters with Impacts at 25M BR competitions. Thomas, RAW, USFT, etc. But, his 744 would be competitive anywhere at any competition in the world at 25M. Look at the scores in the US National and also the World competitions. 744 would win a lot of them...So maybe Impacts can be competitive with a very good shooter. Yes, he was shooting Open Class, but most of the time the Open scores aren't any better, and sometimes worse than the HV and LV scores. The only variable we don't know are the wind conditions that he shot in, but hey, he's in Chile, when is it not windy? ;)

I never said he or anyone else couldn’t be competitive with impacts or I wouldn’t even consider it myself! but when you are used to shooting one platform “which he is” its harder to get up to speed with a completely different style of gun than what I’m used to shooting in competition. ( not to mention the time to test etc. that you can’t easily do outside in Mi winters! )

Wind was not so rough, and I did not use a FrontRest, only my bipod, here is a pic just before shooting on 25m (or yards ... mmm donno)

@nomojo65, I didn't mean it that way. I was more thinking that in swirling winds, 744 is just about impossible, so his "winds" were probably light and not swirling. Look at the overall winner at RMAC 2019 at 25M BR, who had a score of 732-28x out of over 60 shooters and won with a .22 Impact. And that is in Unlimited Class where some shooters were shooting 50 FPE .22 caliber RD Monsters. But even with light or no winds, 744 is a great score...

I like to put names on my Rifles, Silver Surfer is the Big Kahuna! jajaja (my other impact) but this one I will call it BLACK MAMBA (accurate bite!) , still need work to do and get 0.177 and a few more things... new scope ... :D (just having fun guys)

If you get .177 let me know, don't hear much about that cal and impact.

Nice, we can compare! good thing I know all (well almost) about modding the impact so I can manufacture new pieces to replace stock one in order to get the best of it, did it already on power settings (one of my impacts shoots 150+ fpe) now I want to do it in the 12 and 20 fpe ... hands on! jaja ;)

I will also fit a LW barrel, I have seen in poly air chocked with 6 and 12 grooves, any advice? fx have 500mm only...I prefer 600 or 700mm

I’ve had really good luck with LW-poly barrels in both of my RAW’s but they came directly from Martin Rutterford but do believe they hand picked and lapped etc.? As far as land & groove barrels my LW-12 groove was extremely accurate on my TM model! I don’t have the skill or machinery to do what your thinking or I would try it, my main concern is getting a .177 FX barrel to shoot in USARB HV CLASS and if I can get velocity down to about 820fps with 13.4gr jsb’s and still be accurate? I was thinking 500mm barrel, I think that’s all the .177 is offered in?

Well edosan, I want to make it clear, most will tell you the poly barrel is the way to go! And I agree for the 13.4 jsb’s (maybe I just had an exceptional 12 groove?) also the 12 groove liked the 10.3’s better! I believe it has more to do with the thinner skirts of the 10.3’s conforming to the land’s & groove’s for a better seal between pellet and barrel? IMO?
