FX Impact .25 Longest Groundhog Hit.

I am continued to be amazed at the accuracy of the FX Impacts with slugs once you get them dialed in. I was not sure I got a good hit on this groundhog or bounced the slug off the top of his head but the slow mo video showed otherwise. I did not recover him but when they are sitting on their dens they can wiggle back down the hole. Bill

I hit one at about 75 yards with my 17 HMR saw him fall walked up to him he was hit but still alive. I hate that. I never call it a kill if I don’t see a body. I limit my air rifle to 50 yards because I can’t be sure of a head shot beyond that The 17 I limit to 100. Even then it’s not always pretty . No criticism just my personal experience . They typically don’t stray far from the hole. You really have to hit them hard to anchor them and even then. They’re tuff Planning to hunt tomorrow

.25 slugs are completely different game.

Yep. I’m sitting in the fields now. Shot one with the 223 at about 100 yards . Clearly saw him flop over. BUT he got back into the hole. Don’t know. Did I miss? Possibly . Guys it happens. Scope cam would be a help if you get a real good imagine. I’m used to shooting fairly long range and I miss some of the close ones. And I know you don’t want to am low in the close ones. Hunting is a challenge. If I hit them all it wouldn’t be

bubblerboy64 I don't mind you having your input on the shot. I am in a different camp when it comes to you have to have a body to call it a kill. I have shot hundreds of groundhogs with centerfire rifles with body shots they can make it back to their hole but they are dead in a few seconds just like that deer that runs a few yards after being hit. Also I have shot lots of groundhogs precisely in the head with my air rifles and walk up to the hole and they will be dead but wiggling and sliding into their hole. It is almost like a built in reflex action. In the slow motion you can see the slug going right between the eye and ear and with the penetration these slugs have I know that was a kill shot. Bill

I don’t think it hurts to be challenged on some on this. Would you agree that skepticism is not unreasonable? Or because I can’t do it is it unfair to question that perhaps others can? That’s another reasonable point of view. Or should we all just says GREAT SHOT and no more. Those seem to be the three options. No offense intended Bill. Perhaps a bit of a how it was accomplished would be in order. I take no offense at all to your reply either. I’m not close minded about this. I shoot a lot and maybe in time ....

Bill I just now was just now able to down load your video. I’ll agree it looked like a hit. But it also looked like he went straight down and never moved. So what happened? Are you sure he wasn’t at another hole? This is the kind of stuff that happens to me.
Fairly often.

bubblerboy64 there were more than one hole in the area as you saw with very thick vegetation so it is possible it was in another hole. I think it is more likely as I said it made it to the hole and slide down, particularly if he was at one of those vertically oriented spy holes. As far as set-up goes I was shooting off the hood of my van with my rifle on a rubber mat using an Accu-tac bipod. I was using a wind flag for direction and had a wind meter to give me the mph. I input all that info. into Stelok including the incline. Also when that 26.8 grain Nielsen slug which penetrates very well, arrived on target it had 31.37 fpe left which would have no problem going through that groundhogs skull. Bill

Good shot. Nice video. What scope/camera combo are you using?

Corvid hunter I am using the Side Shot with a GoPro Hero 5 with a Peau Productions 8.25mm lens. The rifle scope is a Discovery4-20x50 FFP, while not a top dollar scope it has a lot of features I like and seems to be one of the better scopes for giving me a clear video. By the way it is the second one I have bought. Here are the links to those two items. Bill
