FX Dreamline, 23gr slugs, 900fps, 41fpe, & 1 MOA @ 100 yards? Full disclosure

Hello AirgunNation Peoples,

Can the FX Dreamline .22 caliber shoot slugs well? Answer: Yes, phenomenally! Here is my definitive guide on the simple modifications and tunes that have my FX Dreamline - Bullpup .22 caliber consistently achieving a 903 fps average with Nielsen Specialty Ammo .218 23 grain HP-FB slugs, 41 fpe, 42 shots per fill, and shooting (doing my part) 1 MOA groups @ 100 yards!

THE GUN & AMMO

First and foremost, was the barrel. Running the FX 600mm Smooth Twist X system paired with the FX 600mm slug “A” liner. (500mm is stock for .22 caliber, 600mm barrel & slug liner sold separately) The tune at the time of the installation of this “slug barrel setup” was optimized for JSB 18.13 grain pellets. Which was at 140 bar AMP regulator setting and a “true MAX” hammer spring tension. Yielding 775 fps with 23 grain slugs, which was too slow and fell short on accuracy.

The need for speed!

Problem was that the internal hammer spring tension screw was already maxed out... So I keyed in on the AMP regulator pressure. First I turned it up to 150, then 160 and the velocity got slower, around 750 fps at those regulator pressures. So, I reset the AMP regulator back to 140 bar. This indicated to me that I needed more hammer spring tension. How? Like I mentioned I was already “maxed out”. Well here’s how, a simple spacer aka “washer” to add more spring tension to the hammer spring. A power tuning technique I picked up from tuning springers back in the day.

HAMMER SPRING SPACER MODIFICATION (no drilling or cutting of OEM parts required)

Step 1. Use a small 3mm thick rubber washer as a hammer spring spacer for a hammer spring tension increase.

Step 2. Place or fit into the inside of of the Dreamline’s spring guide.

Step 3. Set the internal hammer tension grub screw to 5mm (I learned this through chronograph testing later but, I’ll just tell you now)

Step 4. Reassemble

Step 5. Insure transfer port dial is set to .”25/.30” and hammer spring adjuster dial is set to “MAX”.

FYI: Cocking was smooth as stock form no catching, binding, or any indication of this modification changing anything operational. Hammer still is free-floating just added spring tension when cocked. A benefit...

Now, at this point let me remind you that the AMP regulator is set to 140 bar, transfer port is @ .25/.30, and hammer spring dial turned to MAX. With these settings chronograph testing returned 890 - 895 fps with the 23 grain NSA slugs! Wow, I was doing something right here!

Okay, I thought... She has the hammer spring tension to push the valve open, now I’ll increase the AMP regulator pressure slowly (in 5 bar increments) and chronograph test again.

FINAL AMP REGULATOR SETTING 145 BAR (which gave me the 900 fps)

This tune gives a 903 fps average, that is 41 fpe with 23 grain slugs, and 42 shots from a 230 bar fill.

5 shots for every 10 bar of air used down to 145 bar regulator pressure.

230 - 145 = 85

85 / 10 = 8.5

8.5 x 5 = 42.5 shots per fill

Lastly, (and the best of all) after zeroing in the DreamPup and a lot of range practice. I shot my first sub MOA 10 shot group! Still in disbelief!

Like I said,”Full Disclosure”.

Needless to say, I am very happy!

Yup, thats not out of the ordinary (it's not). Slugs take longer to stabilize

Tried my best. Still would be a super dead duck at 50 yards. On the 100 yard yard target, the first shot hit dead on bullseye. Then, on the second shot while aiming I thought, “Surely this one is going to be a flyer”. I had that same thought 9 total times, but every shot just struck on top of the other! Slugs are the real deal! Amazed..

very nice shooting and i like the mod and how you showed it big thumbs up!! out of curiosity hae you shot pellets out of the slug liner and if so how was their grouping?

Yes, I now use the slug “A” liner for both pellets and slugs exclusively. The accuracy is spot on with pellets, even at high speeds! Here is a 50 yard Target and some chronograph results for JSB 18.13 grain & JSB Jumbo Monster Redesigned 25.39 grain. Plus another 50 yard NSA 23 grain slug group.

10 shot 50 yard groups with the DreamPup .22 caliber using each projectile through the 600mm slug “A” liner. Shot full throttle!

Joekool, right now I'm in the same boat as you were. Max HS 145br, max on the wheel get 778fps dial it down to 4 on the wheel and I get 824fps. Thanks for the info, I'll give this a try. Where did you get your rubber washer 3mm think x? Dia.? Haven't had mine apart yet. Dave

The rubber washers come from a hardware store in a assorted box of different sizes. Haven’t done any other measuring besides what you see in the above pictures. You may just have to measure the inside diameter of the spring guide and just fit the washer aka cut it to size. Pretty easy non technical stuff.

Question:

What weight ammo are you shooting?

Sounds like you need to dial back your hammer spring tension grub screw. Then chronograph test. So, when your HS wheel is set to “MAX” you get your highest velocity. Then when you dial the HS wheel down from “MAX” your speeds will also go down. That way you get full use of the ranges of your adjustable power controls for your Dreamline. If setting “4” shoots faster than the “MAX” setting, your shorting yourself a couple power levels. Optimally, you want the airgun to get full use of all possible power settings with “MAX” shooting the highest fps.

For example, with 23 grain slugs my DreamPup dialed to “MAX” gives me an average of 903fps, “5” gives 890fps, “4” puts out 875 -880fps, and so on and so forth.

Joekool, mine is a .25 cal 600mm slug a liner. Dave

Joekool, I have started backing out the hammer spring screw some. But I lost light and have not gotten back at it. But that was is my intention to get it to shooting with the power wheel on max again. I'll go by the hardware store on my way home and pick up a washer kit. Or do you fell a dilron was would be better? Dave

Delrin plastic would work. Just make sure it is a snug fit and not loose allowing it to slip out. I may replace mine with a delrin type. I’d stick to no more than 3mm deep. Can’t see why you’d have much difference in results with a .25 caliber. Slugs would be heavier, but basic mechanics are the same.

For a .25 caliber the AMP regulator and hammer spring tension grub screw setting may be totally different. You’ll have to test, test, and test some more to find the sweet spot. Harmony and balance between the HS tension and regulator pressure. To reach the best velocity for accuracy and efficient air usage.

Currently, I’m using 165 bar regulator pressure on my FX Crown to reach 916 fps average with 33.5 grain slugs (600mm slug “A” liner -.25 caliber). But that is totally different engineering or gun design.

Awesome stuff!

Can you change calibers with different barrels on the Dreamline rifles?

Yes, you can change calibers on Dreamlines and even reconfigure the rifle to one of the other Dreamline variants (Lite, Tactical, etc.) if you want to buy the components from a different model. The action portion of these is the same for every variation.
