FX Crown- Fixing the Oring that comes out when you dry fire the gun.

Writing this cause I couldn’t find much online. Thanks to Earnest for helping me fix this problem. So here is what happened and what you can do to fix it.

Was cleaning the crown with the liner out of the gun. I pulled the trigger to dry fire the gun and an oring popped out of the barrel housing. I had read about not doing this but mistakes happen. This write up is for those who may make the same mistake I did

Point to note, in the FX Crown design, there are 2 orings inside the crown barrel housing. I am not referring to the 2-3 orings which are put on top of the liner to improve harmonics. These 2 orings are inside the breech and barrel housing.

The first one is called the breech oring or the pellet probe oring. In the pic below this is the one which has the red arrow pointing towards it. This is the one which is inside the Brass Transfer Port where the pellet gets loaded. It’s job is to keeps the pellet in place. This is easy to replace and there is also a video online where Earnest does that. It can be taken out and replaced easily. Here is the link for that video.

However there is also an oring that exists inside the silver stainless attachment which is screwed on to the brass transfer port on one side and to the barrel sleeve or barrel housing on the other. See the pic below. The green arrow points towards this oring and also shows where on the stainless part it actually is. That’s a difficult place to get to

This oring is supposed to keep the barrel centered. If you dry fire the gun without the liner, this oring blows out.

Without this oring the barrel will have a clearance of around 0.1-0.2 mm inside the stainless housing which may result in the liner not being centered to the breech. This may result in friction while pushing the pellet in from the breech end OR some air blowing out of the liner and some air blowing into the barrel housing. In both these cases one may see a drop in accuracy or consistency.

The stainless piece is loctited hard to the barrel housing or sleeve. So here is how you can change it.

  1. Remove all orings from outside of the brass TP and the breech oring from inside. Removing these are necessary since you will need to heat the barrel housing to free up the stainless piece. The heat may cause the orings to melt.
  2. Get 2 vise grips and 2 pieces of leather. This will be needed to unscrew the stainless piece from the barrel housing. You will need the kind of vise grips which lock and grip things tight. A standard set of pliers will not be adequate.
  3. Heat the intersection where the stainless piece meets the barrel housing. Also heat about an inch below the stainless piece. It does require a bit of heat since It’s loctitied Preety hard. Use the vise grips to unscrew. I had to let it cool for a while before it started to unscrew.

  5. Once it unscrews you will be able to see the groove where the oring sits. The pic above shows the green arrow pointing towards the groove where the oring goes. Clean the groove and then reinsert the oring inside.
  6. Clean all the loctite residue from the stainless piece and the residue off the threads inside the barrel housing.
  7. Screw them together again. And use the vise grips to tighten. I didn’t use loctite again because I didn’t feel the need to do so.
  8. Replace the breech oring and the 2 orings on top of the brass transfer port.
  9. Thank the lord and move ahead. 😁
