FX Crown .22 NSA slug size

I have a Crown MK2 .22 600mm with superior liner. It loves the Nielsen .217 27.5 grain slugs. With a medium level tune I’m shooting them at 895 fps and they are super accurate and still expand very well all the way out to 100 yards. Those 27.5 grain slugs are shooting just under half inch groups at 50 yards and just barely over 1” at 100 yards.

Scotty1,

Like @jps2486, all my Crown barrels(380mm, 600mm, and 700mm) shoot the .216 JSB KnockOut slug(best accuracy at 50 and 100 yards of any slugs that I've tried) much better than the .217(one of the WORST accuuracy of any of the slugs I've tried) slugs. I've tried H&N slugs in .217 and .218, but there didn't seem to be much difference in measured diameter(there was SOO much lube on them too). Both diameters shot ok, but different weights shot very differently. I've tried NSA slugs from .2165 to .218. Some of the heavier weights of the .2165 and .217 NSAs shot ALMOST as consistently well as the .216 KOs. Whereas the heavier weights in .2175 and .218s shot TERRIBLY. The lighter weight NSA slugs all perform didn't seem to be as particular with regard to diameter size.

Most barrels will be very picky with regard to the exact diameter(to the thousanths) slug they will shoot well. You can "slug" your barrel to find this exact diameter if you have the micrometers to take a good enough diameter reading.

Good luck

Great info! Can you tell us anything about how different liner twist rates perform with these slugs?

TDK,

The 380mm, and 600mm have 1:24 twist Superior liners. I only shoot lighter(less than approx 25g) slugs out of these barrels(although the 600mm is long enough to shoot heavier slug fast enough to get good performance out of them if I wanted to), and generally at slower speeds. My 700mm barrels have 1:24 Superior and 1:16 Super Heavy liners. The lighter(less than approx 25g) slugs group better out of the Superior liner, and the heavier(over approx 25g) slugs do better out of the Super Heavy liner.

Trying different moderators and/or using removable barrel tuner can help "dial it in" AFTER you find the slug with the right diameter for the barrel and the right weight of slug and muzzle velocity that yields good groups out to the prefered target distance. However, if any of these 3 variables(slug diameter, weight, or speed) change, it will affect barrel harmonics and you MAY have to change moderators and/or barrel tuner setting.

20.2 217 howler’s. Shot few in my 500 impact loves them. 600 mm howlers are great not pellet great but ok. Knockout in 217 are good also. 1:24 twist. Tried the 23 gr also but were not as good. Not a slug tune as I shoot 18 gr at 930. So it’s slower speeds for the slugs but the howlers were the best. 17.5 gr were terrible which I thought would be better.
