Tuning FX Boss questions

I also prefer the older solid barrels that that gun comes with. They aren't so much better than some of the newer stuff. Because a new barrel is more veratile in what projectiles it will work with. But being a solid unit, you'll never have to worry about losing your POI like on a newer multi-piece barrel assembly. And what projectiles the old barrels do shoot well, they shoot outstandingly

The statement that you'd have to modify a newer barrel is correct. You'd need to turn it down about 3mm smaller I think? Might actually need a custom piece milled for it... I can't recall if the transfer port lined up or what. I don't think it did.

Thanks AirGunShooter I wanted to make sure that was doable before I ordered a 580 bottle.

You may have to do a slight modification to the stock, the CF bottle is just slightly larger in diameter. I have the Boss in .30cal and had to "re-clearance" the bottle to the stock gap. It's an easy fix. Loosen the stock mounting bolt/screw, cut or tear a sheet of sand paper into quarters or thirds long wise, put it between the bottle and stock and pull it back and forth, gradually tighten the bolt/screw until it and the piece of sandpaper/bottle are somewhat snug. Then remove the sandpaper and snug the bolt again and check that the gap between the bottle and barrel to see if it's even/symetrical/parallel.

I have an FX Boss that is about 5 years old. I would like to put a carbon fiber bottle on it to lighten it up a bit and also have more air on hand. Can the bottle on my Boss be screwed off and replaced with a current bottle? Also, do any other 30 cal. barrels fit this gun?

Any after market barrel that I was able to find for my Boss required machining. I went with the Lothar Walther barrel on the suggestion from Clem.Chally and had it machined to fit. The brass transfer port unscrews from the stock barrel and can be reused on the new barrel. No matter what barrel you get, have the new barrel modified to fit the receiver - do not modify the receiver.

One more thing about changing the barrel on a Boss, clearance between the proposed new barrel and the bottle. A sleeve and liner system may not work because of the diameter of the sleeve may interfere with the bottle. I had to have a lot of meat taken off of the barrel blank, the machinist had to turn the barrel a 2nd time to get the correct clearance.

The OD on the Boss smooth twist and the STX are the same (14mm), only where it steps down to enter the receiver is it different. Yeah the LW barrels are 16mm iirc so it ends up very close/touching if not turned down there.
