FX Boss .30 smooth twist X barrel swaping ?

Hi,

I've an FX Boss in .30 cal . This is a very accurate gun, but I saw that Krale ( in the Netherlands) is selling a smooth twist X barrel for this gun (instead of the original smooth twist , which is rifled on the last 10 inches ; the X version is rifled all along the barrel ). Is there somebody who tried this? I guess the accuracy must be improved somewhat ; moreover the new barrel is not very expensive , about $ 190 .

By the way , is it possible to install a better shroud for this gun? I looked to Donnyfl and other manufacturers, but cannot found anything .I put a Donnyfl moderator at the end of the shroud; it helps a lot to reduce the noise , but increases the length of the gun and put some weight on the barrel.

Sorry guys , you are right : this barrel is probably not in stock anymore . The good news (for me) is that a couple of minutes after having posted this topic I coudn't wait longer for your answers….and I order one from Krale. I'll get it friday. I think this was maybe the only one available at this moment , so I was Lucky enough 😃 As soon as the new barret will be fitted on my Boss and some pellets shot through it , I'll post a topic to give my first impressions.😉

Well , my best group was 1.2 inches , center to center at 100 yards. I must say that I don't shoot the Boss very often, put maybe 150 pellets through it , because it's a bit loud to shoot in my garden. I'll probably go to a shooting club some day…..or put a better shroud if I find one.

I don't know if the SMX barrel will do better , but I like to make some experiments😃.

I didn't think FX could really improve on the original Smoothtwist that much. Then I shot my .22 Impact X at 200 yards. Imho, I think they perfected the twist rates for long range shooting. My .25 Wildcat was a tack driver out to about 150 yards. After that it opened up quite a bit. I was blown away that a 18 grain pellet was out performing a 25 grain at 200 yards. That's my experience so far between the two.

The STX isn’t going to be any shorter. I’ll bet it won’t be any more accurate either. It’s going to shoot slower at the same tune. It’s going to need more cleaning as well.

With all said, I believe what the STX brings to the table is (with my rebuttal): 1) The ability to shoot other projectiles well other than JSBs. This isn’t a benefit to me as JSB will still prevail as the most accurate in either barrel. 2) If your platform is up to it, the STX will stabilize projectiles at faster speeds than a ST barrel. Again, not really a benefit to me from the Boss or Bobcat. I want 40 shots at 880 fps with the 44.75 JSBs. The ST does this better than a STX, in my opinion.

The ST has the benefit of being a more rigid barrel and not a liner which I personally prefer. A ST barrel will produce more speed at a given reg setting due to less friction. As mentioned previously, the ST will stay cleaner longer.

@zx10wall, Derrick, good points all. Well thought out and well presented. I agree with everything. Also, the rigidity is obvious when comparing the two side by side. Put a DonnyFL Ronin on the end of each, and while the ST may droop a smidge, its not visible. With the STX barrel in the liner, the droop is visible without measurement...

To add to your post, I'd also say that while perhaps the 18 grain does out perform the 25 grain with STX as noted above your post @swish, its pretty much a moot point since you're not going to successfully hunt small game with either, since the sub MOA requirement doesn't exist at 200, or even 150 yards. If you group say at 6 inches at 200 yards with the ST, and 5 inches with the STX, what are your chances of hitting a 1" target with a holdover of in excess of eight feet? Nuff said...

+1 to you Derrick.

You are right , Mike.I've just got my STX .30 today. Well….it's very light compared to the original , but I decided to put it on the Boss.Normally an easy job , except that the stubborn new barrel won't enter the action. Took some carefull measurements : the diameter is to large. Put it to the lathe and this time things seem alright. I reassemble the whole thing , put the shroud and the moderator on …..what a drop!!!! The weight of a fly would be enough to bend this gun.Mmmhhhh…...maybe not a good idea.😏 I didn't shoot the gun today. Tomorrow I'll put it to a test.I'll keep you in touch

This is a 6 shots at 55 yards with the STX .30 an the Boss. Gusts of wind from right , not the ideal conditions to zero a gun but, well I'm not to disappointed with the new barrel. Not really better accuracy but I'l keep going testing it.
