FX barrels. I want some thoughts on an idea.

Okay guys. I have an idea, dare I say an itch that needs to be scratched. My first pcp was a Royale in 22 and have recently upgraded to an Impact X in 22 and 25. I really loved the power wheel on the Royale. I could shoot hares and rabbits at 70m on high then walk inside the sheds and shoot pigeons etc. on low. Wonderful feature. Now I have the Impact and absolutely love it but the only way to drop the power down low enough for shed work is to change the HS adjuster to min. and wind the valve travel adjuster in almost all of the way. That works fine but if the Wildcat had a power adjuster like the Royale/bobcat/streamline/crown, then I probably would have bought one of them instead. What I want to know is how tight is the tolerance between the brass part of the barrel/transfer port area and the main housing? And is it tight enough to simply drill a small transfer port hole directly opposite the original transfer port (along with another alignment notch) and when you want your low power setting simply loosen the barrel retaining screw or screws and rotate the barrel 180 degrees and re-tighten. I know the barrel may not be perfectly straight and you will definitely have to re-zero but I thought you Wildcat owners might be able to increase the versatility of your guns very easily. If the tolerance is tight enough then the air travelling around the outside of the brass section would not be enough to make a difference. I'm sure that I can't be the only one who would love a 30 foot pound Wildcat that could quickly be turned into a 12 foot pound pest gun? Thoughts?

James,

Consider that your dealing with a $2,000 gun. You want to modify it, which will kill its resale value and you have no idea how well the mod would work. You think it might work only. Seems dumb to me. I suspect another gun for shed work is better and more economical. For shed work, scopes and fancy sights are actually detrimental for acquiring a rapid sight picture Open sights are better for this purpose. Shed work is well less than 10 meters usually. Consider a Artemis P700S-A pistol for $250.........jus sayin'

Hi James. I can’t see why that wouldn’t work. Another idea might be a shed barrel. If you got hold of a smooth twist barrel in .22. (Could be some deals around with people moving to smooth x) you could make yourself a a nice short 500mm shed barrel. You could get a brass receiver made up with the smaller transfer port.

Then you wouldn’t risk your new barrel. Hope your enjoying the .25 barrel. You are definitely an idea’s man! +1

well James you got a couple thoughts on this and i like it ,,WILDCAT LOVERS We are wondering why no power wheel ,,people have spoken about this before so 2 things maybe talk to EARNEST let him no your thoughts,, and second what do the BRITS do to detune the pup to under 12 #s ,do they do just what you are suggesting ,,could be lets find out ,,GILES probably would know ,i remember him saying in one of his videos the rifles go to a gun store then he picks up maybe they legalize it there ,he recently did a video at the last batch of shows showing 4 shooting tables supporting a truck a tire on each table so im sending him a message today and ill ask if hes knows about detuning rifles like you suggest ,,if i get a answer ill post it PAT

You know what Thomas Edison said about the first 1,000 attempts to make a light bulb. He didn't haver 1,000 failures, but he did discover 1,000 ways not to make it! I say this because it's imaginative people trying different things that discover better ways to do things.

I read your post several times and wasn't sure you wanted this trick setup for an Impact or a Wildcat. On your Impact you said if you turn the power wheel to MIN and screw the valve adjust in almost all the way it worked fine for shed use. That sure sounds easier than R&R the barrel, readjusting your scope, and have a whole new set of hold points. But hey, even my wife says I look for the easiest ways to do stuff.

Thanks for you're input guys!

Michael, thats a great idea with the probe! Are the Wildcat probes easily removable though? I've haven't had any close up experience with them. It would work great with my impact though. Maybe I can import a UK probe if thats how they restrict them. That 25 barrel is great. I put it back on yesterday in preparation for some major pest control coming up. Really need to sort out another high pressure air supply soon.

Spysir. Yes I thought about just rotating the barrel slightly but wasn't to sure of the repeatability. If you mark the barrel accurately it might work ok. Would be simple for someone to test if they were bored one day. I can't do it with the impact because of the alignment notch.

Leadfoot. I have wanted an adjustable Wildcat for a long time but ended up getting the Impact instead. My worry is that using the valve travel adjuster for large numbers of shots might be too hard on the rubber ball that it hits on. Changing the transfer port size would not put any pressure on other parts of the gun while being able to accurately return to the original high power level.

Hynzie. Thanks. I'd love to know what Giles would have to say on the matter. Keep us posted.

Frankenstein guns are never a good idea, on a plethora of fronts: Liability to bystanders, voiding of warranty, no claim for product liability if you are injured, damage to the gun, decrease in performance, more things to go wrong, etc., etc., etc. Best to simply acquire a gun that is manufacturer-engineered to provide the features you want.

Michael. As long as the probe fit is tight enough than that should work well. Would need another set screw hole but thats easy enough.

Thanks for your concern AnimalHitman. I guess I just feel like the only way to advance products is to try new ideas. As long as they are safe and well thought out before doing so. Thats why I'm still discussing things and have my phone in my hand and not a drill . . . . . . . Yet. ?
