FX Airguns / Pyramyd Air Cup 2019 Gunslynger (Speed Silo) Recap

FX Airguns was proud to be a sponsor of the annual Pyramyd Air Cup and honored by the competitors at the event that decided to put their trust in our company by shooting FX rifles.

One of the annual events held at the Cup is an event called the Gunslynger. This is Pyramyd Air’s speed event where competitors shoot head to head at 16 silhouette targets in rapid succession. Targets are 1/10 scale NRA metal targets, placed at 10, 25, 40 & 55 yards respectively. The PCP class gave contestants the option of either single loading their rifle or starting with an unloaded magazine that would then need to be loaded once the match started.

In an intense turn of events, Matt Dubber accomplished something that has never happened before and that may never happen again. For the third time within a year, he claimed yet another speed shooting victory. This time by beating an impressive field of shooters in the Gunslynger PCP division. Not only did he win, but this means Matt Dubber now has the Grand Slam of speed titles by winning the speed challenges in the last three major airgunning events held (having previously won the Speed Shooting event at the RMAC in June 2019 and last years Speed Silhouette event at the EBR).

His win was hard fought as to win the event he had to beat such opponents as Justin Jacobson (of Utah Airguns), Thayne Simmons, and his father Val Simmons. Side note for those that are not aware; the Simmons father/son combo are responsible for the development of the Side-Shot Magazine and its speed loading abilities that shocked the crowd with its ability to be quickly loaded.

Other new innovations were also on display as Matt, Justin (who finished 4th), Thayne and Val (who finished 2nd) put on display a new aftermarket pump action addition for the FX Impact made by Sabre Tactical. Certainly the “thump thump” their opponents heard as these pump-action equipped Impacts quickly knocked down the silhouettes, added to the intimidation and adrenalin that was felt in the air.

I'm not so sure... First, second, third, fourth, and fifth place at EBR Pro last year were single load technique, the highest speed load shooter finished 6th.. I've watched the videos from PAC, and without a stop watch, it doesn't look any faster than what I saw at RMAC. Dubber looked just as fast with the cocking lever at RMAC as he did at PAC with the pump - and the cocking lever is much smoother. Any target misses at RMAC, even one, and you were eliminated. Of course I didn't have a stop watch on both, and the targets at PAC weren't nearly as varied in distance and position as they were at RMAC. The shooters still have to aim and pull the trigger on each shot. ;) Single elimination is tough. The second fastest shooter there could have been eliminated in the first round! In this style of competition, the best usually wins, but the second best rarely finishes second.

I'm amazed by these guys … might be interesting to know how they prepare for a match! I know all about the practice and getting the guns shooting perfectly and marking the hold over or under for each line of targets. But what do they do personally to get themselves and their metabolism set for the match … avoid coffee? avoid anything that can raise blood pressure ( hahaha …. I'm 69 so I had to put that in there ), carry a good luck charm, meditation, etc, etc, etc. I would be willing to bet that if a vendor was selling good luck charms like rabbit foot … they would be sold out by the time the first event started.

Methinks they all deserve a lot of credit for the air gun sports growing by leaps and bounds over the last few years. I pray that it will continue to be a safe and fun and growing sport for all as the years pass by. What a wonderful time to be alive!
