FX .177 barrels

jps2486, I've pushed JSB/FX/Air Arm pellets through the barrel with a tipton rod and they move through relatively smoothly without much resistance. They have a 4.52 head size. I've shot the Howler and JSB 13g knockout slugs and they both shoot fine and with some tuning the JSB knockouts are approaching very good accuracy. However, I've not pushed a slug through my barrel.

You also made a comment on your 1st post, that you need a lot of strength to pull a patchworm through the .177 barrel STX. I think yours is a compact. Mine is 600mm and the STX superior and I can easily pull a Patchworm through with both a .22 cotton patch or a patchworm (or tipton) felt pellet through. No winding around fingers or tools needed.

I'm wondering if your have a faulty barrel that is too just too damn tight? Lots of agreement with you on this thread about the .177 STX barrels fouling and losing accuracy with only ~100 shots. Lots of agreement about the choke, but your seems exceedingly tight. You also only have <200 pellets through your barrel. First thing i did with my STX was clean it and it was unbelievably filthy. You mentioned you have cleaned yours, and I suspect the patches were coming out clean. Perhaps contact FX and see if they can send you a replacement liner and show them the pictures.

Alternatively, perhaps the NSA slug is the culprit. I contacted NSA awhile back for a suggestion for a .177 slug and they told me to hold off and mentioned something about their pellets currently don't do will with the .177 STX (see below). They were more than happy to suggest slugs for other .177 rifles I have. I have also read somewhere that FX was working on an updated .177 liner that will better accommodate slugs (I'm looking for this source now). If you refrain from shooting the NSA's will your barrel foul up as fast and loose accuracy? You posted a picture of the pellet you pushed through. Was that nearly as tight a fit? Do you have access to JSB knockouts or Howler slugs? I'm thinking that there is a chance the NSA are just too big and fouling your barrel and/or effecting your accuracy. Another pellet/slug may be better tolerated until you can get some Howlers/JSB, a or a modified STX .177 ?

This is the response I got from Rick Nielsen regarding the NSA's in an STX Superior .177

"The Fx I would wait until they come out with a slug liner, the stock liner does not have good reports with slugs.

The Redwold I would test the 12.5 or 15.0 grain, heavier did not seem to shoot that great. If you wanted to try just one I would try the 12.5 grain.

Good luck and sorry about being long winded....

Not sure why but I have good luck with FX pellet liner in both 300mm and 500mm length. I expected them to shoot the 12.5 grain NSA slugs poorly but the opposit is true. I have shot sub MOA groups at 100 yards with both length, I even ordered a 600mm version just to get a bit more speed. Have not cleaned my barrel at all since initial polish which can’t take off much material at all besides smoothing things out a bit. Still no issues with switching bad to pellets yet. No idea what’s going on, 3 .177 barrels shooting well without cleaning can’t be a fluke.
