FWB 300S

Today I picked up a 300S at a local gun show. It was sold as surplus by the local college rifle team some time ago. The seller couldn't see through the target sights and clamped on a cheap scope. but he handed me the complicated rear sight. The price was good and I bought it, not even paying attention to the brand until I got home. I figured out how to cock it, bought some .177 pellets and shot it. Wow. Although the gun is well used and not pretty, it is well made and shots great. I think I will really like it.

This is all new to me and I would like to get it started right. First, where should I send it for a complete overall, tune up? I have no idea what shape it is in and what needs to be cleaned, replaced, or tuned. Second, I am an old duffer, and no matter how neat the original front and rear sights may be, I will need a scope. What do folks recommend for mounts? It looks like it has dovetail grooves on the receiver. Is that what folks use, or is there a picatinny attachment of some sort I should look at? Finally, the gun seemed to have very, very little recoil, either fore or aft. So do I need to have special springer scope or will any scope work?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Mike

Mike, I have a Bushnell Trophy 4-12x40 on mine. I paid $400 for mine scope and all. The most accurate gun I have. I bought it from a guy I know locally here in Jackson, MO. The gun shoots all good pellets well. That Target below was 5 pellets through the exact same hole. Measured it .174 outside to outside.

well before you send it off look at the breech seal and see what color it is if blue that is fine and you can catch the color of the front piston buffer and if it isn't a creamest white corlor that should be good

the 300's use a steel pistol ring that is good they 100,000 shots or forever, they need next to any lube and there is very little tuning to be done

the rifle works on a sledge system where as the action slide back and forth on the front and rear pins

as for scopes the 300 should not break the average scope, the recoil is very soft

learn about the rifle ---- go here at the factory for a part diagram and also for the best price for parts

https://www.feinwerkbau.de/en/Service-Download/Exploded-drawings

here for some pictures and info

https://forum.vintageairgunsgallery.com/feinwerkbau-rifles/feinwerkbau-modell-300s/

now on the mount, you can use dovetail mount or use an adapter like these for Weaver Picatinny

https://www.pyramydair.com/s/a/UTG_11mm_3_8_Dovetail_to_Weaver_Adapter_2pcs/4148

you can find them also on Ebay

so that is a start but I do recommend try to learn about the rifle so you know how it works and why to help you down the road

the 300 is a great old 10 meter rifle and don't be afraid of taking the stock off and seeing what it looks like underneath it could tell you I lot about past care

now if the breech seal and internal buffer are old or damaged you will need a smith to R&R them

take care

The FWB 300 series are superb rifled from form to function. In their day they were used in the Olympics 10m events. The rifle has a sledge system by which the action is supposed to slide backwards absorbing nearly all felt recoil. They came in a nice variety of stocks from Tyrolean to Running Boar/Target the latter of which has no provision for open sights and must be scoped. David Slade at Airgunwerks is always a good one for tuning but there are several respectable FWB tuners out there just ask around a bit. Here's my batch of 300S'. Tyrolean, Universal v1, Match L, Running Boar v1, Running Boar v4.

Folks, thank you so much. The information is exactly what I was looking for. I was lost, but now I know there is plenty of support. I also am tickled that I blindly stumbled into such a wonderful rifle and rifle community. Based on the photos here, and in the link, my rifle is likely the Universal or Match and it has the large pistol grip cap like the v1 picture above. It has the adjustable comb hardware in the stock but somebody replaced the comb with a covered foam piece attached with Velcro. Although it works, it hurts to look at and I would like to find a replacement comb, or have one made. Any recommendations for stock work/parts?

I am agreed that I need to learn more about the gun before doing much else, and the link to the manual is appreciated. I will print it out. Also, the suggestion to look at the seal is well taken. It is blue so I will focus on getting to know the gun before sending it to Scott, Dave, or others for now.

The dovetail/picatinny adapter looks great, and I am glad a "regular" scope will work. It is super soft shooting. But loading the pellet looks like it would be a challenge with the bigger scopes.

I have the feeling this will be the start of a beautiful, and expensive, experience.

Again, thank you one and all for your time and kindness.

You have just bought the best spring piston rifle ever made IMO. It doesn't have a lot of power, but the accuracy is the best. Plus, it's easy to cock and has no recoil. As far as scopes are concerned, there are a lot of choices. I think you can get away with most anything and don't need a springer rated scope. I use my gun for 25M benchrest and use a Mueller 8-32X40 scope. I found a picatinny adapter that has droop built into it which you will need. Then, any picatinny/weaver scope mounts will work. Note that the scope is high enough to gain easy access to loading pellets. Overhaul consists of replacing the breech seal and the buffer at the end of the piston. Disassemble/reassemble is a bit complicated, but there are Youtube videos showing how it's done. You may want to refinish the stock and make it look purty. Here's mine.

Here's the drooper mount adapter available at Pyramyd Air.

Very pretty rifle. Before making mine pretty I need to do something about the spooky foam comb somebody put on it. The original comb and all the hardware are gone. I was in touch with a guy tonight who can make a new adjustable comb with all the hardware. It would be covered with marine vinyl because he won't be able to match the wood. But that is OK because he is a master and make soft combs for trap and skeet shooters. It is very expensive.

I have searched for any stocks for sale but found none. There must be a source or resource for stocks. Any suggestions?

I have ordered the drooper scope rail and will order a better scope tomorrow. Since I will be using a scope I would like to remove the front sight, but need some sort of end cap to replace it so it looks "finished". Does anybody make or sell such barrel caps for this rifle? It seems like there should be a modest market for it.

If I can't find a replacement stock in short order I will send off mine for the adjustable comb job. And then I will refinish it. It won't be anywhere near as pretty as the rifles on this page. But as Merle Haggard says, it ain't love, but it ain't bad.

Regards all.

Mike

I'll second the recommendation for Scott at Motorhead Tuning if you wanted a seasoned hand to look at it.

For a replacement muzzle thingy, you can find muzzle brakes, or whatever you want to call them, being sold according to muzzle outer diameter.

So, measure the OD of the barrel and buy accordingly. Its not as if you need something specifically made by FWB.

Usually, a couple set screws is all they use to hold on to the barrel.

!! WARNING !!

PROUD DAD STUFF AND BRAGGING AHEAD

I stumbled onto this FWB300S myself. Actually it stumbled onto me! It took me over a year to really warm up to mine but now I absolutely love it. My appreciation for this rifle grows as the time goes by. I have tried 4 scopes on mine so far and I haven’t found one that I am really pleased with yet. Currently I have a 3-12 BugBuster on it. It works just fine but there is a POI shift when using the parallax or mag adjustments. I’m not shooting any competition so it’s not a huge issue but it’s there and noticeable. As far as the rifle.... it’s fantastic!

This is Nate and that group that he is showing is 5 shots at 50 yards in calm conditions. Pretty good for the first time I think. It shows what the gun is capable of. I haven’t been able to much better than that myself .

enjoy your rifle, it’s a good one!
