Four Of My Best Underlevers!

My untuned. 177 AA Pro Sport is 960 w/Crosman 7.9 Wanted to tune it down to around 13 ftlbs just to make it easier to cock. It shoots so smoothly right now though that I don't know if I want to change a thing. I just did one of my TX200'S at right around 13 ftlbs and what a difference it made in the way the gun shoots. JM told me that that is where the Air Arms guns will be at their best. I might have to buy another Pro Sport to find out.

Talk is not worth a whole lot if you can’t back it up, and they say a picture is worth a thousand words. So, to prove to myself more than anyone I broke out my four top underlevers to accuracy and chronograph test them back to back this afternoon from 35 yards. I have included pictures of the results below in this post. Mind you I haven’t shot any of these airguns in over a week, so with no scope adjustments I just fired 10 shots with each gun over the chronograph at a target 35 yards away. Giving myself only one sighter shot in the top left corner of each target. Then shooting one shot at each outer bull and lastly a five shot group at the center bullseye 🎯! This was a pretty fun challenge! Shots were taken off of shooting sticks and sitting in a stool. I know with scope adjustments shots would have resulted in mostly bullseye’s, but I wanted to display honest results for you all and for my own integrity. I love days off work!

Looks like all are shooting very nicely. Really like the 470. I have a 460 as well-accurate and powerful. I also have an HW97 and a Walther LGU-the HW97 is very good and the Walther is excellent. My most accurate springer-Walther LGU.

Recently bought a Diana copy (externally) of a Mauser 98 - just on a lark. Wasn't expecting much. What a surprise. Easy to cock; great trigger; no vibration; and, it flat shoots the lights out. Using AA pellets am getting five shot groups at 50 yds of around 1" with my old eyes and the open sights. The tapered front post is really a great aid for accuracy so long as I use a consistent 6 O'clock hold to prevent vertical stringing. Will eventually scope it, but am having too much fun to do it now.

Believe it is the same action as the 460.

Do you own any Weihrauch rifles?

I was meaning JoeKool. You got to have HW77K and HW97K in on the mix. I can't see many springers beating them consistently.

I am aware that Weihrauch springers are fine as wine 🍷! But no I don’t own one, or have not ever shot one. No doubt they shoot wonderfully! But so does the guns I own, maybe one day. 👍🏽

Thanks gotta like those finely made underlevers! Nice collection brandg!

Yes JW652 that Diana Mauser K98 air rifle shares the same action as the 460 Magnum. Sweet gun!

Hey I understand totally. And thanks for sharing about the guns you posted. I am intrigued by the RWS guns you listed.

No magnum RWS but I do have a Diana 430L and a ProSport an LGU and a Gamo CFX. The Prosport is ultra smooth, incredible trigger, gorgeous finish and is as accurate as yours. The LGU is amazingly smooth as well, but the trigger is not nearly equal to the Air Arms. The gun is at least as accurate though, and sometimes possibly more so. It's a pleasure to shoot and is often my "go to gun". The CFX is fairly accurate and the easiest to cock. Twangy compared to the expensive guns and it's accurate but definitely not in the same way as the other two. Trigger is mediocre (Tuna trigger).

The 430L is harsh in every way when in comparison to those 3. I want to like the gun as it seems fairly well made and is very inexpensive! But it's not going well. Cocking is metallic and rough to the point I think something may be wrong? It shoots consistently but the accuracy cannot be compared to the other two. I thought putting a few hundred rounds through it would help but so far it seems the same (Harsh!) The trigger is nice, better than the LGU but not as nice as the Prosport. The gun is small and enjoyable to shoulder and point. Firing cycle is decent. Cocking is harder than the other three.

I think it needs to be disassembled and tuned.... not sure if it will ever shoot well though, seems pretty scatter shot compared to the others. I've tried JSB 7.87, 7.33, 8.4 FTT, Barracuda, CPL's CPHP's and 3 or 4 other pellets without much luck.

Thanks for the rundown on the under levers... I love them!

Regards,

John

Nice collection John,

Thanks for the reply!

Thanks for sharing your underlevers.

My underlevers are a .22cal HW97kt and two .25 cal Hatsan Dominator carbine(the spring one, and the gas ram). The HW is all stock and I've never opened it up. I've had it for about 1.5yrs. The Hatsans I've had for a few months more and I've been all inside them and replaced the spring in the spring one, put in a top hat and washers. I shoot both the HW97kt and the spring Dominator just as accurately and I think I enjoy shooting the spring Dominator the most. The HW97kt and the spring Dominator are both about the same fpe. It took me a long time to build up my confidence with the spring Dominator. However, after a lot of target shooting, tuning and break-in, it has become a smooth and accurate shooting air rifle. I just wish the stock wasn't so ugly but I didn't buy it for looks. The gas ram Dominator is still challenging me; I might reduce the pressure in the gas ram sometime. Right now, I have it in pieces because some stray piece of sand or metal got in between the compression cylinder and receiver housing and jammed up the works as well as left a deep gouge in the receiver housing. So, I'm honing the heck out of it. Tough luck. That's something that gets me about underlevers with a sliding compression chamber- its possible to get foreign material in there and bugger up your gun but its not a deal breaker for me. I like the underlever platform.

I wish I had known more about Walther though. I probably would have bought an LGU instead of the HW97kt. I just didn't realize how high quality the LGUs are.
