I know that the air rifle has to be in checked luggage but what about the air cylinder? Does it need to be detached from the rifle? Does the cylinder have to be empty?

No pressurized capsules is in the airlines rules or TSA. Other than that they are not specific to airguns only fire arms. I have flown around the country including Puerto Rico without problems. You now need two non TSA locks on your gun case. That was my last little hitch with TSA departing Texas. Although he said since not a fire arm he let it go but I have two locks now. I have not met an employee yet with our airgun knowledge. You just say pellet gun, I was once asked about pressure gauge from a State Police inspection departing Puerto Rico and I mentioned pressure but all released before arrival. Good luck Lmctex. I'm a pilot for Delta. Our rules say bottles must be empty with valve secured open. You can look the exact rules up online. we have them, I assume other airlines do as well.
