First three hours with my Avenger-some tune info added

well this .22 Avenger came in last Friday. I saw right away when I took it out of the box that it must have a leak as it was empty. No biggie. I just filled it up and shot a few different pellets to get a feel for it. It held air long enough that I was able to get quite a few shots down range before dark. I bled it once and adjusted reg to about 1800 psi and thats where I left it. Since I was leaving town for a vacation I just put it away and figured I would get to it when I got back home.

Tonight I pulled it out of the cabinet and it was empty so I figured I might as well tear in to it and fix it. I'm not one that will send a gun back warranty or not, especially a cheaper one like this. Besides I wanted to tear it down and check it out anyway.

I found three leaks. First one was the bleed screw. I took it out and made sure everything looked good and it did . I just had to tighten it pretty snug and it finally stopped leaking.

But I still heard air leaking so I had to take the stock off to find it. The lower tube was leaking where it screws into the block and the upper tube was leaking where the adaptor screws in to the tube. So I drained it again and took those two off and replaced the orings. FYI, the oring on the receiver side is a 2.5x12 mm and the one in the tube is a 3.0x 13mm.

Taking the stock off is a bit of a puzzle at first but now its not so bad.

To do that remove the four Allen head screws on the sides of the fore end and the front screw in the pic rail under neath the fore end. It then pops apart.

The front screws are a little shorter than the rear ones so make sure they go back in the right holes. Also the barrel band has two small setscrews opposing each other that clamp it in place between the upper air tube and shroud. I dont care for this setup as it marks up both parts and if you over tighten them it will mess the shroyd and airtube up..

When reinstalling the band leave it loose until you get the sides back on so you can line up the holes for the screws. Also the bottom screw hole is not centered so make sure that hole goes closer to the front.

I also adjusted the trigger to its minimum setting and on my gun it breaks consistently at 2#. I can live with it as is. It would need longer screws to make it any better but they are using a captured type screw with a clip on it so it won't come out. I decided to leave it alone.

So, I've spent one hour shooting my gun and two hours working on it. I could have tore it down all the way but as of now there is no need to. I'm still happy with it as I expected I would do this anyway. The gun is very accurate from what little I've shot it and I it should get a bunch of shots. For $300 its still a bargain for what you get.

I'm trying to load some pics but keep getting error message. Ill keep trying.

Ok got them loaded finally.

one other thing is the sling mounts. Not sure what they were thinking would mount there. I only use Uncle Mikes quick attach a ling mounts but to use them on here I had to file just a little to get them on. Hopefully it won't break out. If it does ill come up with another way to mount it.

That really wasn't a very complicated leak repair. May be everyone who buys one should fix the leaks themselves like fixing your own car. Maybe someone should make a video then everyone can fix their own.

I expected a good percentage of these brand new ones to leak but not really DOA like yours and AEAC Steve's and another reviewer before you guys too. I was guessing they would leak within the first 3 months. Or maybe 6 months especially if filled past 3000psi that's for sure. Or within maybe a month if filled to maximum pressure 100% of the time. Well AEAC Steve gave the heads up his first one out of 2 was a leaked so nobody should be surprised if they order one after knowing about Steve's first DOA leaky new one for review.

Appreciate the how to tutorial. How does it shoot at 50 and 100 yards?

Haven't had time to shoot it except at 35 yards. That was last week when I first got it. Ill probably strech it to 50 this weekend if it quits raining and if I get time.

I figured this gun would be fairly easy to fix thats why I tore into it. I dont care about the warranty because I always fix and repair my own guns. Only guns I ever sent out was an RX1 to David Slade about 20 years ago. And a Rapid to AZ to work his magic on.

I'm not good at making videos but a complete teardown video would be nice.

BTW YO,

I'm still up to fixing your Huben if you want me to.

I can relate to this report on so many levels. I too will just take care of issues rather than sending the product back.
This way of thinking is what drove me to make so many teardown and tweaking videos over the years. I think the average person digs their heels into principal more than they should and the shipping companies are the only ones profiting from the whole exchange.

Great write up and I took notes.

Thanks to everyone for the compliments. Good news is that its holding air now so its time to start tuning. But of course its pouring down rain here so it will have to wait a bit to shoot targets.

I went out to the garage and decided to run a string of Crosman 14.3 over the chrony. I filled to 3500 as thats all my tank had in it at this time.

Hammer spring is 1/2 turn in from min setting . Reg is 1850 as best I can tell. Looks like I got 75 shots on reg before I noticed change in sound and speed. The fps is a little wide but since its a new gun and or may not like this tune combo its still not that bad. I'm sure it will get better.

Ok, just ran a string with 18 gr jsb. Same reg setting of 1850, but filled gun to 4200 from compressor. I shot ten shots while adjusting hammer spring in in 1/2 turn increments. Settled on 2 turns in and 18 gr jsb around 875. Looks like about 94 shots before dropping off reg.

I received my .22 Avenger last week and finally got it set up. Due to recent major surgery, I needed help getting it set up, tuned, and sighted in so I called on my good friend Springrrrr to give me a hand. The gun has no leaks and no reg creep. I wanted to shoot JSB 18.13's at 870-880 fps and we ended up achieving that goal with the reg set at 2000psi and 1 turn on the hammer spring (my hammer spring has a total of 3 turns of adjustment). It appears to be using approx. 20 psi per shot which is about 100 shots from 4000 psi to 2000 psi. After sighting it in, Springrrrr was shooting the same hole at 25 yards. I tried a few shots and hit dead center each time. I also added a monocore baffle that I purchased from Geoffk on Ebay that helped to quiet it down. The baffle fits over the end of the barrel inside the shroud and extends to the shroud end cap. Now I just need to see what can be done to remove some of the creep in the 2nd stage of the trigger. So far I'm thrilled with the Avenger. I especially like the fact that it only weighs 6 lbs which makes it much more manageable than my other 8 to 10 lb beasts.

Thanks for the post and O-ring sizes, my Avenger is loosing about 100psi an hour overnight and see a tear down in my near future.
My rig is setup right now at 1200 reg/0.5 turns in on HS. 50 shots starting at 4K down to 2500 yields 861 fps average with a high of 868, low 852 for a 2.96SD (I think) using CPHP 14.3s. It’s my first attempt at a 15yd “backyard tune”.
