I set up a bait station where the skunk was set up at the perfect angle for a heart shot. This one only got a few feet from the bait before piling up. I’m using a .25 Crown with the 25.39 pellet, at 16 yards. This is the 4th one in a row that didn’t spray after getting a heart shot. The other ones did get back under the shop after being shot ( about 20 feet ), but they died without spraying, and I retrieved them easily. My theory is that the pellet rips through the vitals missing the leg bones, the skunk doesn’t know it’s dead, it recoils and runs for cover without spraying, and it bleeds out quickly. I’m going to do an autopsy on this one as soon as it gets light. I’m interested in seeing if I hit the heart. I deal with a lot of skunks every year, and I’m sold on the heart shot.
