Graphic!! First skunk of 2021, heart shot, no spray!

I set up a bait station where the skunk was set up at the perfect angle for a heart shot. This one only got a few feet from the bait before piling up. I’m using a .25 Crown with the 25.39 pellet, at 16 yards. This is the 4th one in a row that didn’t spray after getting a heart shot. The other ones did get back under the shop after being shot ( about 20 feet ), but they died without spraying, and I retrieved them easily. My theory is that the pellet rips through the vitals missing the leg bones, the skunk doesn’t know it’s dead, it recoils and runs for cover without spraying, and it bleeds out quickly. I’m going to do an autopsy on this one as soon as it gets light. I’m interested in seeing if I hit the heart. I deal with a lot of skunks every year, and I’m sold on the heart shot.

Let us know...but my suspicion is there is no specific shot guaranteed to stop the spraying. Anything that causes them to tense their bodies up during stress will cause some spray. Best chance is anything that causes lights out with no twitching....

I've seen head shots that leave death spasms, heart shots where they run another 25 yards. I've also seen head and heart shots that are lights out.....

I used to only do head shots and had a few that didn’t spray much, but still sprayed. Enough that it was an ordeal to get them bagged. I used to have the hose set up with a sprinkler near the bait station and I’d shoot the skunk and turn on the hose. It helped a lot, but it was days before the stink was gone. The liquid spray will burn grass too! I remember one headshot that was instant death, the skunk face planted and sprayed a fountain six feet into the air. You could clearly see it in the flashlight beam lol. After observing the reactions of the last four heart shots I think what happens is that the skunk receives the shot and instead of facing an enemy and spraying, it knows it’s hurt and it takes to cover since nothing is threatening it. This skunk is number 36! My neighbor had two other ones case tanned, they are strange looking laying on the table complete with the long claws lol.

Just got two more in the last half hour! Neither of them got more than a couple feet from where they were shot. Both were heart shots again. This time I do smell a little bit of spray, hopefully it was just a small squirt lol. I’ll find out at first light and take pictures. Maybe do autopsy’s to see the damage if there’s no stink.

Well so much for heart shot skunks not spraying lol! The big one did spray enough for it to be very unpleasant to get it bagged up. I’m still going to use the shot because a lot of the time they don’t spray. I got the chipmunk as it was getting light. Last year a chipmunk built a nest on the manifold of my truck using insulation from around the engine. They never get a pass here.
